If CAD Was Like Drumming…

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If CAD was like drumming… the Swiss would be the 3D pummeling force of a 5000 lb. gorilla. I lived in Basel for a little bit, but didn’t get to see the Top Secret Drum Corps. If you like drums and junk, you’ll love this.

This is exactly what I would be doing if I wasn’t behind a computer screen, except in my backyard… with yelling neighbors… and just me, hitting a pan.

You Can Never Be Too Careful

I finally got a Nikon D40 today for my wife Maggie. The camera is sweet.

What’s disconcerting is one of the user manual warnings. Apparently there’s some people with twitchy fingers poking themselves in the eye.

SolidWorks 2008 SP 1.0, Go and Get It

solidworks 2008 logo

In a recent poll I held, some of you were waiting to upgrade to SolidWorks 2008 till SP1.0 came out. Psst, hey, it’s out. Whatcha waiting for?I just installed it with the Installation Manager and had no problems at all on my XP machine besides what Jason also came across with the full installation download. No big deal though, just took a little while to suck through the straw.

Post some issues if you got’em.

Fastest BioFuel Car Designed in SolidWorks

koenigsegg-ccxr.jpg

You may recall a post about the Koenigsegg CCX being the fastest street legal car designed in SolidWorks.

Now they have the fastest biofuel car designed in SolidWorks, and it doesn’t look ridiculous and slow. It’s called the CCXR.

“… the ethanol in biofuel has the positive side effect of cooling the combustion chambers, as well as a higher octane value, well over 100 RON, which gives the high power. Due to the fact that the biofuel has higher octane and cooling characteristics, the power has gone up to 1018 hp at 7200 rpm and the torque to 1060 nm at 6100 rpm.”
WorldCarFans.com

What’s it cost?
I like a comment from one reader at Jalopnik:

Now I’ll have to decide on whether to buy a Koenigsegg, or a fleet of Priuses.

Makes complete sense when you’ll be shelling out 2.2 million dollars (1.5 million Euro) for this beasty little speed demon.

You may not agree that CO2 impacts global weather patterns or that ethanol is the way to go, but fast cars that don’t depend on petrol are cool and Koenigsegg is doing just that. Check out more pics here.

New Blog Gets It Straight (Horizontal)

stiffarm.jpg

There’s a new blog in town and it’s sporting a crop of writers. SolidWorks Legion has come on the scene and plans to give you the huzzah on SolidWorks.

You may recognize the authors if you frequent the SolidWorks Yahoo group. FCSuper, and his two compatriots, are sporting a Wordpress Blog with a nice blue-gray theme that just says subscribe to my feed.

The latest post tears the issue of modeling right open with a look at what some refer to ‘Horizontal modeling.’ Basically that’s building off reference geometry (planes, sketches) instead of building off other parts (typical top-down modeling.) It raises some good points and may help you determine a better way to do some things you’re working on.

5 Gentle Steps to Team Collaboration in SolidWorks

gophers.jpg

Getting through a project in a multi-user environment is one of the greatest challenges an engineering company can face.

There’s this PDM and that PDM, this process and that process, and it quickly turns into a community of gopher-heads popping up to have each other check stuff in ‘real quick’ while schedules dwindle into the pasty thin atmosphere of successful ventures.

Shake off the sad face, there’s hope yet.
Fortunately, SolidWorks has some options that make collaboration much easier. But where do you start? How do you set up a multi-user environment? Here’s how to keep the peeps in their seats and the music bumpin’ for a fully collaborated machine of a team.

Dr. Don Norman Tells You the Future

dr-don-norman-emo-design.jpgOne of the speakers at SolidWorks World 2008 is going to be Dr. Don Norman. His book The Design of Future Things just came out last Monday.

“It’s meant to be fun to read, but it’s meant to be a little bit scary and cautionary.”

Sounds good. The book is a continuation of a previous book, titled Emotional Design, which his Keynote Address will focus on. What’s that? Well “attractive things work better” and “an activity-centered design” is the key. You may think he’s off his rocker, but you gotta admit, you like cool looking stuff.

Anyway, all this to say, Bruce Tharp from Core77 spoke with him at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. If you want a preview of some things you may hear at his Keynote address, check out the interview here. It’s definitely thought provoking and shouldn’t be ignored.
