Son, go get your ma, looks like SpaceCliam done got into the PDM’in, gone Sharepoint, and is gettin’ the IT folks all excited. It’s true, the young-ish 3D software company has sprouted some data management hairs on the bare chest of its direct modeling software, bringing you both an addon for managing SpaceClaim files and integration for the web-based, data sifting Inforbix apps.

SpaceClaim Data Management for SharePoint

Why is SpaceClaim getting into Data management? Simple. Their customers–They use SpaceClaim, They use Sharepoint. Match made in data management heaven.

SpaceClaim Data Management is based on Microsoft SharePoint and is available to all SpaceClaim 2012 customers at no additional charge, and works with existing SharePoint servers… It provides basic workgroup-level check-in, check-out, and versioning for SpaceClaim documents, including support for external dependencies, parts, assemblies, drawings, and 3D markups. No external user interface is required.

With all the hub-bub over PDM, we’ve been looking, watching, wondering and thinking about what the next version of PDM will be. A step in what we think is this direction by SpaceClaim is integration with Inforbix , an app that sifts through data and file meta-data on your own server to sort the information as you see fit. Do you use SpaceClaim? If so, how do you currently manage your files? While this works for SpaceClaim files, the very nature of SpaceClaim being able to work with multiple other formats, makes us wonder where the management of other data comes in. SpaceClaim Announces Data Management for SharePoint
and Inforbix Product Data Aps Support

CONCORD, MA, July 17, 2012 – SpaceClaim, the leader in easy and accessible 3D CAD for engineering, mechanical design, and manufacturing, announced today the immediate availability of SpaceClaim Data Management for SharePoint, an easy to deploy workgroup data management tool for extended engineering and product development teams to collaborate around engineering designs and data.

SpaceClaim Data Management is based on Microsoft SharePoint and is available to all SpaceClaim 2012 customers at no additional charge, and works with existing SharePoint servers, making the cost of deployment negligible for the majority of companies that already use Microsoft Corp. solutions. It provides basic workgroup-level check-in, check-out, and versioning for SpaceClaim documents, including support for external dependencies, parts, assemblies, drawings, and 3D markups. No external user interface is required. Developed using the SpaceClaim API and SharePoint, this new SpaceClaim add-in leverages the same technology available to all SpaceClaim partners, representing the type of seamless integration that anyone, including SpaceClaim customers, can add to their SpaceClaim installations.

“We’ve created a document management system that extends our core philosophy of providing easy-to-use, cost effective, and enterprise-friendly tools that are also very easy to deploy,” said Chris Randles, President and CEO, SpaceClaim. “SpaceClaim already fully uses the Microsoft stack on the desktop, and we have always been an innovator in the use of Microsoft technologies, such as our full support for multi-touch and gesture-based UI. Using SharePoint as a platform for SpaceClaim Data Management makes perfect sense for our end-users, as well as our customers’, IT departments.”

SpaceClaim also announced today that Inforbix now supports the SpaceClaim data format. SpaceClaim users can now use Inforbix to aggregate, find, access, reuse, and share SpaceClaim data types located anywhere in their company in addition to other data types such as CAD drawings, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and PDFs. Inforbix is an easy to install and use cloud-based productivity tool that works by scanning SpaceClaim files along with other data types and securely send index information to the cloud where it is processed. On-premise data is not touched, moved, modified, or migrated. Watch a video describing this new capability.
