Can we get a “great balls of 3D poly-mesh gravy!” up in here? 3D Systems has announced the acquisition of Geomagic, makers of a range of scanning, design software and haptic devices. This hit us like a ton of voxel-based bricks, and we’re all excited and terrified of what awaits us when the dust settles. It has certainly set our 2013 predictions in motion. Here’s our take on it all.
3D Systems acquisition of Geomagic
Clearly a 3D Systems / Geomagic combo would be an R&D powerhouse for mesh-based 3D applications–from scanning to processing to printing–but if the history of these two giants is any indicator, we won’t be able to afford any of it–unless a kid-targeted Cube scanner is in the plans (You know the cute factor of your little, baby girl scanning her dolly is just going to be PRICELESS.)
The most exciting bit: Ping Fu (one of our favorite people), who loves the 3D Printed shoe, is taking over as Chief Strategy Officer for 3D Systems. The ‘3D copy machine’ is about to become a reality, people.
We should have seen it coming when 3D Systems partnered with Geomagic on their Cubify software/hardware combo just a year ago this month, not to mention the acquisition rampage buying up everything from Z-Corp to Sycode to Alibre to Rapidform to MyRobotNation to Bespoke Innovations. These cats have been gunnin’ hard for market share since mid-2011, and have already become the 800lb. poly-mesh Gorilla of the 3D CAD scene.
But is that a good thing? Time will tell. With a visionary like Ping Fu at the helm, the expanded resources of the combined company could be an incredible boon for innovation. That said, we’ve been none-too-happy to see 3DS’s Goliath put the kabosh on Form Labs’ David, and we’re not alone in our distaste for the seemingly-monopolistic move. Is 3DS interested in pushing the industry forward or in holding it back? We think it’s the former, and we hope that the Geomagic acquisition will be fertile soil for future innovations.
Where do you think this is heading and who is 3D Systems going to gobble up next?
