Using Drawing Views as Layers for a Cleaner Drawing

solidworks tipsI want my drawings to be as clear as possible, but I also want the least amount of views and pages to get the information across. This can be difficult when there are parts weaving in and around each other. So, imagine if you could combine two views together to reduce a bunch of extra sheets and views.

Let me explain, by doing the following, you will be able to reduce the number of views and have a cleaner drawing. It involves using two configurations and two views and placing them on top of each other. The main purpose of this it to make some parts stand out from others. Let’s see how to do it.

Slap Someone with a 3D glove

Wouldn’t you just love to put a giant metal contraption on your hand and touch the stuff in your computer screen. Get ready to feel the warm buzz of the pixels against your skin with this very large 3D glove.

Fellow blogger Ben Eadie of SolidMentor.com sent me a link to this story.

3d glove

The software creates 3D images that you can interact with via the glove. It sad and a bit odd though that this is not being thought of in regard to 3D design. Seriously, forget grabbing someone’s hand and going on a virtual walk on the beach. Of course, it would be much more practical to apply it to something that uses 3d geometry, but hey, if you put the two together you can strangle the guy you’re working on that model with for starting a sketch on the wrong plane.

This isn’t all new though. In 2003 Dassault Systems, that owns SolidWorks and Catia, teamed up with Immersion Corp. with their VirtualHand software and added the CyberGlove in 2005. It’s interesting and probably a little fun to use, but man is that glove gonna smell funky after a few days of modeling while eating pizza.

Japanese Game Show Human Tetris

I have no idea. This is the funniest video I’ve seen in so long. Leave it to the Japanese to make American television look boring.

Basically, contestants have to contort their bodies into weird shapes to avoid being hit by huge blocks of Styrofoam that come flying at them or else be pushed into a pool of yellow water.

I think this needs to be considered for the main event at SolidWorks World 2008.

How to Make your Own Custom Background for SolidWorks

customizing solidworks

You can customize lots of things in SolidWorks from backgrounds to toolbars. But did you know you can spice up your background with your own custom image? It’s not that hard either. Here’s how you can do it.

Enhance Your 3D skills

enhance your skills

Have you ever been bored with what you do at work or wish you could just model something different? Well, what if you could enhance your 3D skills and maybe even come up with a new product idea.

People that keep learning, keep creating opportunities.

Hmm. Now isn’t that just a little piece of wisdom. In actuality, the last thing you may want to do is learn more about something you use all day at work, but trying these following ideas may not only enhance your skills, they may open up other oportunities for you as well.

3D Art on Skateboards

skateboard 3D artSome artist are having their designs put onto the bottom of skateboards with a laser.

I love to skateboard and my last board had a really cool tattoo graphic on it done by my brother. I almost didn’t want to skate it… but I did. I ended up breaking it. I was actually kind of glad because I hadn’t skated it too long and the graphic was still there.

I don’t think I could skate one of these though, especially if I shelled out $500 for it. It’s kinda cool, cuase it’s art, but cheesy cause it’s on a board you wouldn’t want to skate. This is probably going ot hang on a wall next to a nice landscape painting.

What’s really cool is the applications for other things. Huge countertops with enlays and engravings or some other wall art are two things that come to mind.

How to Design Efficient Parts for Greatest Usability

solidworks tipsSolidWorks is so easy to get started in, you can spit parts out like a factory without even thinking about it. However, one of the most important things to understand when starting out in a 3D modeling program is knowing how to build a part for how it will be used and how design changes may affect the way it functions.

With just a few tips you can make your parts load faster, change quicker and be shining examples of how to get things done.

We want parts to do two things

  1. Load fast
  2. Be easily reused

This means looking at how we’re going to create parts. People call this different things, but I’m going to call it setting Design Guidelines for your parts. What’s the best thing about this? You can do it really quick in your head. Here’s how.

Top 5 questions for SolidWorks 2008

solidworks 2008 logoI was gonna go through some more new features for SolidWorks 2008, but after the last two post on the interface and sketching I started feeling like a demo jock again doing a What’s New spiel, so I’m gonna dig down to the bone in the following…

Top 5 questions for SolidWorks 2008

These were the most frequent questions I was asked after talking to a number of my colleagues.

  1. Did they change a bunch of stuff that didn’t need changing?
  2. Will we have to upgrade hardware?
  3. Will my old settings be affected?
  4. Is there a make engineering button?
  5. Is it faster?
