Having an obsessive, deeply-rooted, and somewhat inexplicable passion for everyday objects is practically a required character trait in every Industrial Designer. For that reason, the task of renovating, reinventing, refining, and reforming the most common objects is one of the greatest and most enjoyable challenges for aesthetics visionaries. For millennia, domestic housewares, like furniture, have been a staple for designers to prove themselves by getting people to think about space and arrangement differently, and to appreciate the everyday objects that surround us. The Li-Wai Cup/Vase Series is the quintessence of these notions, and to see something of such contemporary style injected with traditional Chinese roots is simply stellar!
On the first day of SolidWorks World, you can always expect a big announcement. The big one this year is the announcement of SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual (SWMC). Last year they announced it as well, but this time it comes with a release date and pricing. $249/user/mth, available April 2nd. The price is already being discussed and debated online, but after a few discussions and even more questions we were able to determine and verify the overarching direction behind this new product and others to come.
SolidWorks World 2014 has yet to officially start, but announcements and launches are already in the mix. We’re at the Stratasys Press Event this afternoon where they’ve just announced their release of the first 3 color, multi-material 3D printer–the Objet500 Connex3. This is the real deal folks. It’s available as of today with companies like Trek and Legacy Effects beta testing the machine over the last several months. It’s the newest in their Objet line of Connex tech and we’re convinced you’ll find it quite interesting.

Recreating a blooming flower is not something that one would typically associate with modeling and 3D printing with SolidWorks, however design student Richard Clarkson has accomplished just that in a recent additive manufacturing-based college class. The Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design student put his Creative Digital Manufacturing course to good use when he chose to explore the kinetic possibilities of 3D prints and how they can be used to recreate movements seen in the natural world by using the simple principal of pushed air.
