For those who joined the party late, good old Franky Zapata is the father of ‘the future of water sports’ – or that’s what we’d like to think of him as. We did a profile on him a while back here, where we got to know more about his Flyboard and his stunt videos left us breathless.

Based on his earlier version, where a deck attached to your feet spurts you forth thanks to a whole lot of Physics, the new Hoverboard too makes you ride the waves like a seasoned pro. We got an opportunity to ask Franky a few questions about his new board and this is what he had to say…

What inspired you to create the racing boards?

Well as a jet-ski pro and passionate individual I Had the idea quite naturally I would say. As I am actually a fan of the film “back to the future” and I remembered that if this wasn’t a fiction it would take place in 2015. So I thought it would be a great opportunity to mix my passion for extreme sports and my interests in great movies.

I am pretty sure Marty McFly would love our board and if he does, I hope he would give me a call so we can give it a try together (laughters)

What according to you is the potential tech that could be used in making the boards, but is not being used?

It took us 10 months to develop Hoverboard by ZR® and I can’t think of anything else to add to the machine. Of course we could add some gadgets to the board such as GPS, radio. Now the last thing that is left to develop is the human factor. Practice will lead to improvement and innovation.

What is the future, what new refinements or dream-board according to you?

The absolute dream would be the invention of a universal board, which could function anywhere without being connected to anything. A Board that would be fully autonomous.

As Franky elaborates on the details, “The Hoverboard is a surf board attached to a PWC (Personal Watercraft) which gives it propulsion through air. The whole propulsion is routed through the primary nozzle that is attached to the board of the user. The thrust from the PWC is routed through an 18 meters hose up to the Hoverboard where the rider can enjoy new amazing sensation. On the board, highs of up upto 5 meters and speeds upto 40km/h can be achieved.”

You can use the Hoverboard with a PWC driver or alone thanks to the Electronic Management Kit (EMK).
