Logging into Shapeways last week was a bit disconcerting – almost made me think I was at the wrong website. Shapeways has completely revamped the look and feel of their site, their logo and their interface. The reason? Evolution we suppose. As Shapeways begins to offer more materials, higher quality and a better platform for its community, the site must change as well. What about the logo? What’s the story there?
Love steam power? I know, stupid question. Who DOESN’T love steam power. Well, it just so happens that Open Source Ecology is looking for a saavy Project Manager type for their Steam Power initiative. If you recall, Open Source Ecology is the group creating the Global Construction Kit, 50 different industrial machines to make DIY civilization more efficient. It’s a cool project, one we fully support and one you can be a part of as well.
Cubify Invent is CAD software aimed at the uninitiated consumer with a 3D printer like the 3D System’s Cube. Unlike the free to use AutoDesk 123D, TinkerCAD or SketchUp, it cost $49, but has all the functions you would need to make almost any part fairly quickly. Extrude 2D into 3D? Yup! Fillets and other such model manipulation? Check. Direct to 3D printing button? Most certainly.
This could also read, “Man machines gun parts, people freak out.” Hundreds of stories and thousands of comments erupted on the interewebs this week after HaveBlue, a gunsmithing member of the AR15.com forums, posted about printing the lower receiver of an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. It’s not the first print of a firearm, the first freaking out (or the last), but it does make for interesting insight on what people assume about manufacturing and more specifically, 3D printing technology.
