To our subtractive manufacturing excitement, we’ve seen an increase in the number of desktop CNC machines internetting their way into our lives over the past year. The latest of these is the Evo-One, a sleek package from MakerDreams that fits in 530cm (20.8″) envelope. A perfect size for that woodtop desk next to your well-groomed ficus.

The Venice-based company has flown past their $65k campaign goal on Kickstarter, doubling that to begin high-scale production. From the design and price to the features and accessories, there are so many impressive things about this small CNC. The spindle is a single aluminum block with 5 ball bearings and a motor that cranks from 3000 to 18,000 RPM with support for mills from 1mm to 7mm. It has an ample work area at 370mm x 220mm x 120mm (14.6″ x 8.6″ 4.7″), a touch-plate for auto-zeroing your tool and an emergency stop touch plate. It’s a solid frame that looks easily maintained and was kicked off with early bird pricing of €1,499 ($1635) and

They have built their own custom software, called Cre-Mov, to execute your G-code and provide a real-time preview. It cuts through the expected materials including acrylics, plywood, balsa wood, aluminum or brass and even Vetronite, carbon, linoleum, wax and foam.

It’s marketed as a ‘CNC Mill made for anyone’. As with the Glowforge all-in-one, we’re seeing this consumer-centric approach work very successfully. A quality video and production ready to begin doesn’t hurt either.

There are a few days left on the Evo_one campaign with the first batch expected to ship May 2016 and the last batch to ship in September 2016. Expect pre-orders to be available after the campaign has ended on the MakerDreams website.
