When it comes to keeping paper alive and kicking in an ever-increasing tablet-sketching world, leave it up to Moleskine to find ways of bridging the divide. Earlier this year, the sketchbook giant announced a partnership with smartpen manufacturer Livescribe that offers a solution for backing up your analog sketches into the cloud.

Previously, the Italian sketchbook manufacturer has partnered up with Cloud-based services including Evernote and Adobe to offer ways of getting your analog notes into the Cloud…however these options required an additional step of taking photographs with your smartphone.

In partnership with the smartpen manufacturer, the company announced that the “Livescribe Notebook by Moleskine” will allow users to immediately upload their pen strokes as they happen.

The notebook, which from the outside looks like a stylized traditional black Moleskine book, features dot patterns on the pages that provide a field for a Livescribe pen to automatically translate your marks to a digital backup copy. The pen uses the dot patterns as a guide for mapping out its pre-programmed measurements of the margins and ‘buttons’ on the Moleskine pages. There is also an option to tag your sketches in the case that you want to be able to immediately bring them up in Photoshop or SolidWorks once you get back to the office.

Other features of the Notebook as described by Moleskine include:

  • TAKE NOTE-TAKING TO NEW FRONTIERS –
Take notes in a Moleskine notebook, and send each penstroke to your device, so you can see your ideas travel from paper to screen.
  • BRIDGE ANALOG AND DIGITAL –
Enjoy the convenience of digital whilst indulging in the tactile pleasures of pen and paper, for a seamless creative experience.
  • DISCOVER HANDWRITING RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY –
Convert handwriting into editable text to cut and paste, tweet or SMS your notes as you please.
  • LINK NOTES WITH RECORDED AUDIO –
Livescribe smartpens can capture sound so you can associate key ideas jotted down in the notebook with the full discussion that can be listened to again and again.
  • TAG AND FLAG ITEMS BY TAPPING THE ON-PAGE ICONS WITH THE TIP OF THE SMARTPEN –
Ideas often come in a scattered manner; keep them organised by tagging them on the page and saving them in the app to review action items in one place. Further controls are printed on the bookmarks in the back pocket.
  • COMBINE ICONIC DESIGN WITH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY –
The advanced capabilities of Livescribe smartpens meet the elegant space of the Moleskine notebook with its classic design details. Ivory-coloured pages, rounded corners, ribbon bookmark and elastic closure join a cover design that mirrors the pattern on the pen’s body, while the interior contains the famous “in case of loss, please return to…” label on the flyleaf.
