Every once in a while, I get out from behind the computers here at SolidSmack. When I do, I run for the hills with nothing but a tent and sleeping bag… and a van of food, water, emergency supplies, chairs, pop-up tents, bikes, Frisbees, electrical cords, a luggable loo and a healthy supply of toilet paper. What? Of course I take my smartphone. It help me explore, see if squirrels can transmit rabies and if that berry was poisonous. One other item I just took on a camping trip this past weekend is the new BioLite CookStove.

With so many cool things coming out each week, it can be hard to wade through all the rock-awesomeness. With ‘Cool Tools’, we’ve done the hard work for you. This week we saw the release of the all-new (and one-handed) Kindle Oasis, a new take on modular furniture for DJs, an app for helping you…

Imagine if you could own a piece of furniture many would consider a piece of art? That’s how you would describe the Lagoon table by LA Table, a design company that goes the everyday design of traditional furniture. Thier new project is the brainchild of creator and designer of the company Alexandre Chapelin, who has been designing since the age of 14. He launched LA Table after having dinner at a friend’s house and noticing the table was a pile of rubbish. Now, the company aims to create furniture that’s both creative and atmospheric, and the Lagoon series is a perfect example.

Two weeks ago we did the unthinkable. We taped back our eyelids, slapped on some CAD spandex (that exists right?) and launched a series of articles on Fusion 360. It’s finally time we took a deeper dive into the toolset and explore: Part Modeling, Assembly Modeling, Simulation, CAM, and Collaboration. This week, we’re going to start smack dab in the comfy confines of our home field – Part Modeling. While Autodesk touts Fusion 360 is in a class of design tools that that go beyond 1990’s CAD in the cloud, it needs to have those futuristic features as a foundation to prove it. Let’s have a look, shall we?
