Modeling with both Sub-D and NURBS is all the rage with the kids these days (at least we’d like to think so) and Power Surfacing is one add-on that allows you to use such a novelly modern modelling methodology inside SolidWorks. Since its debut in January and our hands-on in with Paul McCrorey there have been a few glimpses at how to use that new found surfacing power. Now, Mark Biasotti, Senior Product Manager with Dassault Systems SolidWorks, takes it for a spin showing you how to model that famous X-box game controller you’ve seen in the SolidWorks marketing material, turning what took 125 feature to create the basic shape in SolidWorks into one feature with Power Surfacing.
The concept of Designing for the Other 90% has been coming up more frequently in recent years…especially with the ease of putting your product out there and funding through crowd-funding sites like Kickstarter. However the challenge for raising these funds has usually been centered around creating a product that will not only be effective for those needing aid, but also a product that is just as relevant or has a place in ‘the 10%’ world as well (ie TOMS Shoes). Perhaps the SOCCKET is one of those rare design projects that’s able to walk that fine line.
MIT is in no shortage of true innovators these days, and the projects just keep on coming. The latest innovation by interaction researcher Jinha Lee involves “the enabling of humans to physically interact with machines to make computing more intuitive” through a transparent computer, allowing the user to reach inside of a ‘box’ and manipulate/adjust the content with their hands. Could this be one of the first ‘true’ steps towards a literal ‘hands-on’ CAD interface?
This week we have the great pleasure to speak with the one and only Chuck Cage, founder of the uber-rockin’ tool blog Toolmonger.com—-the ‘world’s first tool blog’ as a matter fact.
CadFaster, the makers of CadFaster|Collaborate, the BIM mobility app have retooled their marketing efforts, launching a new app for the MCAD market, MyCadbox. It’s a new product and a whole new website aimed at increasing your propensity to share models with others across the web and mobile devices. Is it ready for prime time?
