As we all know, not all 3D printers are equal when it comes to the printing materials. Depending on the fabrication process, 3D printers can use any number of materials including thermoplastics, metal alloys and even edible substances.

The DWS Lab XFAB however, wants to change that.

Using laser stereolithography, the new XFAB is capable of using a total of nine materials to print with including acrylate, ABS (multiple versions), polypropylene materials, ceramics and rubber-like materials…making the printer one of the more diverse desktop models on the market.

It’s interesting to note that the printer eschews using a ‘vat’ of liquid materials to create with. Instead, it uses a cartridge system to print from (almost like a 2D paper printer) which allows for quick material changes, reduced or no leakages and no direct material handling or tray consumption costs from repeated use.


The XFAB comes with DWS Labs’ NUATA 3D editing software, which features high-resolution printing at around an 80-micron level and automatic generation of support structures as well as a support structure to remove all other functions.


With a retail price of $5,000, the XFAB will definitely be up there among the more expensive desktop options…however DWS Labs plans to release a smaller version using the same tech as its big brother for half that price sometime in the near future. Even at half the price, the ROI seems distant.
