From Hippies to Van Lifers, few vehicles have come to represent multiple subcultures as well as the VW Microbus. While the German automotive manufacturer ceased production of the vans years ago, that hasn’t discouraged die-hard fans from rebuilding their own custom VW Microbus models to their own standards.

Unsurprisingly—and after years of teaser concept models—the company has made the decision to put the Microbus back into production. This time, as to be expected, it will be fully electric while still tapping into the charm and nostalgia that made it an icon all those years ago.

Announced last week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, the I.D. BUZZ (current model name) will arrive at VW dealerships in 2022—starting in North America, Europe, and China.

“After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘please build this car’,” Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess said at the unveiling in Pebble Beach. When asked why Pebble Beach was the chosen location to make the announcement, Diess explained: “The Microbus has long been part of the California lifestyle. Now we’re bringing it back by reinventing it as an electric vehicle.”

Because the electric drive components don’t take up much space (the batteries will be mounted in the vehicle floor), the vehicle is able to have a long wheelbase and short overhangs…which ultimately translate to a roomier interior:
