For those with ‘well-behaved’ dogs, carrying a leash at all times in order to obey leash laws can be…well, extremely annoying. Between trips to the park, hikes through the trails, or even a jaunt downtown, finding and carrying a leash can be a cumbersome experience. Rollo co-founders Tony Lord and Sid Fohrman saw this overlooked problem and teamed up with the Portland, Oregon design consultancy INDUSTRY to develop what human dog-spokesman Cesar Milan is calling “the only collar that allows you to obey both the laws of nature and the laws of man.”
The Rollo Collar
“There is a huge opportunity to integrate the leash and the collar into one system that is easy to use and provides freedom for you and your pet.”
-Oved Valadez, Industrial Designer
Recently launched on the new crowdfunding platform Crowd Supply, the Rollo Collar turns the existing two-part leash and collar system into one seamless system. Molded from soft-touch rubber, the collar is waterproof, weatherproof, washable, and extremely durable for all those Autumn runs through Forest Park and the like. Pulling off a collar design with integrated hard components couldn’t have been an easy task, and what has resulted will most likely reinvent the leash and collar as we know it:

The Rollo’s retractable leash concept is similar to existing retractable leashes, except the entire system is carried by the dog. When the owner chooses to restrain their best friend, they simply reach down, grab the top of the collar, and pull the cord to the desired length. From an industrial design perspective, designer Oved Valadez and team developed a solution that is both comfortable for the dog and accessible for the human. The patented and patent pending collar is designed to be worn as an everyday collar.

The magnetically attached ergonomic leash handle fits the contour of the dog’s neck, ultimately keeping the product ‘invisible’ to the dog’s experience. At 4.5 feet, the leash length is perfect for keeping the dog beside or behind the owner while still giving enough slack to briefly explore or mark territory.

The Rollo is $40 USD and can be backed/purchased through Crowd Supply.
