When you think about it, the design of dice haven’t changed much over the years. You can get them in different colors and more sides if you’re doing a Dungeons & Dragons run, but otherwise you can always count on dice looking the same. One startup team is looking to change the way you think about this small cube. Min Mendis have developed Luma Dice, metal LED-powered dice that glow with different colors. No, there are no tricks or special features to these dice; they just look really cool.

Each side of the six sided dice lights up with different colors for each face: 6-blue, 5-green, 4-red, 3-yellow, 2-purple, and 1-cyan. It’s also carved out of a solid block of aluminum making it one of the sturdier dice out there. But this doesn’t mean it’s heavy; it only weighs 9.5 grams. Battery life? Luma Dice has you covered. Each die uses an accelerometer to detect when it’s in use. After it’s been still for 20 seconds it shuts off to save battery power. The batteries themselves can also easily be replaced; just unscrew the top and plunk in fresh SR54 batteries, which are available on Amazon.

Serious gamers may be concerned with how well balanced these dice are. While the team can’t promise perfect rolls every time, they did their best to distribute the balance to produce fair rolls and judging from test videos they seem right on the mark.

Luma Dice are currently seeking funding over at Kickstarter. Though they still have 33 days left to goal, they have already surpassed their goal of $10,000 and have nearly raised $100,000… for dice. The early bird dice, which are completely sold out, were only $27. But there are still die available at $29, $55, and $79 packages depending on how many die you want.

Depending on how much money the campaign raises, the team plans to make Luma Dice programmable, introduce new colors, and even produce a 20-sided die. That’s sure to make those D&D nights more exciting!
