Designers and Love. They go together like a wall of fists against the ravages of the elements. That, in fact, is exactly what is happening. For Japan, it’s a time which we, displaced by cappuccino, movie nights and trimming small hedges, can’t quite grasp. Hundreds of thousands across the country were evacuated and many are still homeless.
Enter, Stuart Fingerhut, a designer from Los Angeles. He’s put together the Designers Love Japan charity auction to aid the earthquake and tsunami victims in northeast Japan. Designers around the world are joining in to support the effort. How are they helping? How can you join in? This is how…
Shelters for Japan
The project goal is simple :
Raise money to support Shigeru Ban Architects’ deployment of shelters for displaced people in the Tohoku region.
“We are currently preparing to deploy imple partitions for evacuees taking shelter at gymnasiums in the Tohoku region. From now on, for people taking shelter in these sites, it is necessary to avoid distress from the lack of privacy and high density.” – Shigeru Ban Architects
Stuart plans to go live with the auction in the next few weeks and have it run over the course of 2-4 weeks. There are two ways to participate – submit a product design to the auction and/or take part in the auction. Watch the Designers ♥ Japan Facebook page for all the updates. The more designs submitted for the auction, the more housing can be delivered. Here are justa few of the wonderful examples already submitted. Two of Stuart’s submission are the pendant lamp and a wall mounted organizer.
