We’ve all had that moment. We see something completely jaw-dropping, fumbled to take a picture or capture video, and by the time we dig our phones out of pockets/purses, it’s all over. Life is so unfair.
A crew from NYC has designed a new camera that will eliminates capturing every moment by… well capturing every moment. Their Perfect Memory Camera was successfully funded on Indiegogo, garnering over $167,000, 500% over their goal of $30,000. And the idea is so ingenious, you’ll wonder why it hasn’t happened sooner.
In a nutshell, the camera acts as a ‘real-life DVR’ that constantly records video of everything that goes on in front you. It has a 4-hour run time in constant stream mode and if something interesting comes up, you simply let the video continue to record. When it’s over, you simply tap the front of the camera and it auto-edits the footage down to the last 5-minutes of video, discarding the previous time before hand.
The company behind the tech, General Streaming Systems, designed the camera around an Ambarella A7LS75 Sports Camera SoC, which is capable of capturing video at 60fps @ 1080p and 120fps at 720p respectively. It also produces 12/8/4MP images using an onboard camera with a F2.8 aperture and a 1400 wide-angle FOV. Additionally, it features a microSD slot that can handle up to 128GB of storage as well as onboard Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n @ 2.4GHz) and a built-in microphone for capturing audio. All of which is packed into a small ‘luxury metal build’ that comes in two different colors–silver or rose gold.
Aesthetically speaking, the boxy design resonates. Attached to your lapel, you wouldn’t look like the worst spy. Just one with a big camera on your lapel. Is that a camera?… “No… it’s an old, family, crest pin, heirloom, thingy, or something.” Even though many might say they don’t want to be filmed by your shirt cam, little kids certainly wouldn’t complain (about that anyway). So, it’s a perfect device to capture your a child’s wacky antics. Or… dare we do this… body-cams for the kids–replay their day from their perspective!
The camera features several other modes besides constant record, including live-streaming content directly to Android or iOS devices, taking time-lapse photos and videos and car DVR Loop Mode, which deletes old files automatically when the camera’s storage is full. It also has a plethora of mounting options besides being worn around the neck, including options for tripods, vehicles, bicycles, helmets and almost any flat surface.
The Perfect Memory Camera Indigogo campaign is over so anyone interested in getting one will have to wait for the initial backers to receive theirs before they become available again. According the campaign the prices for early bird specials started at $119 and up, expected prices after have an MSRP of $249 for the same basic bundle, which nets you the camera and six accessories, including USB cable and magnet mount.
It seems like something like this should exist already. Have you seen any small cameras that do something similar?
