by Josh on August 20, 2009 · View Comments

If you’re anxious to spray sweet gravy out your nose at the site of the new rendering capabilities in PhotoView360, your wait is mostly over as of right now.

Spoon it on, cause the Photoview 360 2010 Beta Rendering Contest has gone through the first round, and the entries… are not too shabby. You’ll notice some enhancements right away, namely, Depth of Field (DOF), Decals and ohhhhhhh yeah, custom background and environments. How ya like them biscuits?

Below are the winners. You can see all the submissions at SolidWorks Gallery PhotoView 360 2010 Renderings

Ralf Tide – Toy Race Car

Jim Holland – Piping

Scott Baugh – USB Drive

The Rendering contest is still open for submission. If you’re up for it here are all the details.

everything is so shiny and clean. looks good, custom environments (hdri capable I hope) is a big welcome. How about the material customization. I deal a lot with specific wood grains and paint specs that I have to match pretty closely in my renderings…

To be honest, i am still unimpressed with photoview. All of these renders could have easily been done in Photoworks. Photoview needs a lot more customising options, more control over lights, scene and materials. I hope they work it all out before cutting off Photoworks in 2011…
Cause i'll be one sad puppy.

so your one that's not spraying gravy out the nose huh? ;) All, I gots to say is, it's way better man. and a lot easier than photoworks! I beat by 2011 it'll be comparable to Modo results. would that work for ya??

I'm bettin' HDRI…. yes ;) as for material, I know there are ways to add them and I'm hoping there's more options for this at release.

What have you guys been sitting around for ? (and why would you continue to wait ?) you could have been achieving better results than these for the past year with HyperShot! custom materials, HDRI environments, DoF, 360 shoot arounds….seriously.

Eh…too bad they didn't run these types of contests for Photoview, the current release. Only five entries, I knew that would happen. Anyway the results look decent. The glass texture is cool.

To Frank: Photoview crushes Photoworks in appearance of finished renders. Yes, currently you are severly limited as far as lighting, background, etc…but I'll take that tradeoff for the results.

I'll take that as an opinion until i see actual evidence of that claim. Yes it is faster to set up a render, and is great when you need a quick image to show a client. But so far it hasn't “crushed” Photoworks in any way… I'm not saying PW is the best renderer out there, but it does a very good job, and PV is just a quicker option to me right now.

Do Photoview work with nvidia 8800MGTX? It is extremely anoying that I can't get realview or photoworks for that matter to work….

yeah Chris, no luck here. You use to be able to soft mod GForce Cards to Quadro card using a driver (there's lots of forum topics about this on the web) but it's only possible with the older cards as far as I know. If possible, I'd go with a Quadro FX 1700 (or 1800) which also works pretty well with some recent games too.
