Even Grandma is getting into the act, posting her best 3D printable CAD models of lids that expand the usefulness of that ubiquitous items of every food preserving home, the Mason jar. Lifehacker gathered up a few from Thingiverse – SolidSmack added a few more. It started when a Thingiverse user uploaded his Mason jar lid. Then, all these ‘Grannies’ began physically remixing their own and coming up with the coolest canning ideas. Feast your eyes on these fresh beets after the jump!

1. A better lid

First is a typical Canning Jar Lids by AlexEnglish.

2. Coin slot cap

He also made a Coin Slot Lid For Canning Jar. Sure, you could just slice a slot in a regular old mason jar lid, but what fun is that when you have a 3D printer sitting around?

3. Straining lid

You can’t have a proper mason jar mod, without having one to use as a strainer. Fortunately, there’s a print for that. This is a Strainer lid also from Alex.

4. Fruit fly cap

This Fruit Fly Trap is sure to keep the annoying pests in and your fruit safe.

5. Sprouting Lid

A Sprouting Lid (for radishes, clovers, beans and other sprouts) Inspired by a Strainer design by ojaybe, AlexEnglish made a better one!

6. Fermentation cap

Thingiverser kutch developed a Fermentation Cap for Ball Canning Jars, mostly to make different health foods. The top piece sits in a small pool of liquid formed by the lid, allowing gas from fermentation out but not outside air back in.

7. LED Shielding

About a year ago, when I was in Bolivia, I was racking my brain on uses for a RepRap we built. One idea was to use it for making a mod to the ever-so-common Mason jar lid for weatherproof LED shielding. Here was one of the renderings.

8. Hillbilly Wine Glass

And then there’s this design I discovered on GrabCAD recently, called the Hillbilly Wine Glass by Daniel Flores
