Love ’em or dislike ’em, it’s hard to argue that work aprons are one of the most unsung heroes in the workshop environment. Aside from keeping a worker clean from foam shavings and sawdust – or simply just providing more pockets for keeping tools close – the work apron is also a uniform of sorts that helps craftsmen identify with being in the workshop and leaving the outside world behind.

But just like a well-tailored suit, there’s a range of work apron types and materials for everybody – and needless to say, some are more functional than others.

Inspired by a scene from The Godfather, London apron maker Nigel Ruwende of Saint & Birchley has made it his mission to create the best handmade work aprons that are customized for each client. Although many of his clients come from the food, drink and salon industries, his favorite client is his very own uncle – a carpenter.
