Unveiled recently at the National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky, the Airstream Land Yacht concept aims to bring high design to those state park road trip adventures. While the silver bullet exterior is fairly identical to the classic design with a few upgrades, the interior has been radically redesigned through a partnership between two Italian yacht design and engineering firms.
The Airstream Land Yacht
Co-designed and engineered by Italian firms Technoform and Officina Italiana Design, the interior has room for five adults to comfortably play high-stakes Go Fish! Blackjack on Corian countertops while sitting on Ultraleather seating with concealed LED lighting. The floorplan is similar to existing trailers, with a bedroom area in the front that features a powered lift to reveal storage space, a bathroom in the middle, and a living room/galley in the back.
While some people may be quick to note that the interior isn’t necessarily as flashy or futuristic as some other yacht design concepts, compared to other RV options on the road today, the interior definitely elevates this Airstream to ‘Luxury RV’ status. Coincidentally the late founder of Airstream, Wally Byam, was inspired by the sea more so than the land and named his concepts after nautical themes.
Airstream trailers being towed behind $80,000+ SUVs has been an increasing site as of late, so it’s no surprise that Airstream is capitalizing on this market with the Land Yacht concept. The price hasn’t been announced yet, but a 2012 fully loaded Airstream is currently going for about $50,000 on Ebay, while a vintage Airstream goes for about a fifth of that, depending on the condition and size.
