Perhaps you were dazzled by the enchanting tote-and-row spectacle of the Oru folding Kayak. So much so, that you’ve been on a quest to collect, study and ascertain the benefits of small, folding watercraft. Enter Foldboat. Foldboat is a seamless, hard shell, folding boat fabricated from a single sheet of HDPE plastic and when people see you carry it over, fold it up and slap it down in the park pond, there’s no doubt you’ll turn some heads.
The Foldboat is designed by Royal College of Art graduates Max Frommeld and Arno Mathies For manufacturing, standard sheet sizes of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) are cut on a CNC machine allowing for ‘live hinges’ and the single-piece construction. That material is CHEAP too, with single large sheets easily available for under $50.
‘Foldboat’ is a seamless folding, leisure boat made from a standard sheet of plastic which can be assembled in a relatively short period of time. ‘Foldboat’ was developed after a paper-folding workshop in which systems of creating various forms out of a single piece of material were introduced. The main advantages of the product are transportation, storage and assembly. Ideal for one or two people, ‘Foldboat’ can be used in the urban environment (canals, ponds and lakes). Suitable for fisherman and campers; it also has the potential to be dispatched during disaster relief scenarios such as floods. ‘Foldboat’ includes two cushions and two oars.
A cushion and two oars. Only thing lacking is a picnic basket and your loved one. And since it is a two-person craft, they won’t have to watch you from the shoreline or get one of their own. And on that note, we’re hoping to hear of a product launch soon. Keep up to date via their website or on twitter.
