I awoke Tuesday morning to a disturbance in my inbox. Seven press releases from reverse-engineering software developer, Geomagic. Apparently they had released something… or a few somethings. Indeed they had. Their entire product line received a fresh, new update in the form of Geomagic Studio 2012, Geomagic Wrap 2012 and Geomagic Qualify 2012. Geomagic creates software that allows you to take scanned data and convert it into ussable 3D data across programs like SpaceClaim, SolidWorks Creo Elements/Pro, Inventor and CATIA. Here are the juicy bits from the geometry lovin’ magic makers.

Geomagic Studio 2012

Geomagic Studio is the main product offering for Geomagic that processes the 3D point-cloud data and converts it into the polygonal and NURBS format you can use directly in your 3D modeling program. Geomagic Wrap can take that point cloud data and convert it to 3D polygon meshes and Geomagic Qualify is their 3D inspection software you can use to compare and verify that scanned data. That is an excessive amount of geomagical scan converting goodness. Here are the highlights of the new release of Geomagic Studio 2012 taken straight off of the press release:

  • New Sketch Edit for intuitive direct creation and editing of accurate cross-section curves from point clouds, probed data and polygon models.
  • Improved performance in terms of both speed and data capacity via better use of multithreading and improved memory management. Many features will deliver at least a 40% speed improvement over previous releases of Geomagic Studio.
  • User interface improvements such as new polyline selection tool & context-sensitive right mouse menu.
  • New Remesh command processes 3D files generated by third-party applications (e.g. CAD, FEA) to improve mesh density and uniformity for cleaner, more usable 3D models.
  • Significantly upgraded handling of mid-range scanner data and visualization of large point clouds to assist with mechanical and BIM workflows, plus improved walkthrough functions for improved visualization of the 3D data.
  • New Patch command for complex model repair and hole filling.
  • Enhanced support for probing workflows which includes: Accurate measurement and creation of features using touch probes, portable CMM arms and similar equipment; new features for single point circles and min and max points; creating sketches using probe capture and section planes and more.
  • Robust scripting environment extends, customizes and automates functions with deep access into selected commands in the software.
  • Direct CAD model exchange with SpaceClaim® Direct Modeling Software.

Now, sit back and relax while Jenifer and Kevin tell you all about the hows and whys of Geomagic Studio 2012.
