General Session and Keynote: Day 2 – ProtoType This and SolidWorks 2010

LAST DAY. That means Secret Guests, the SolidWorks Top 10 Enhancement Request and new features coming out in the next version of SolidWorks – yep, SolidWorks 2010.

Are ya ready? Here’s the highlights…

There are many pictures of the last SolidWorks World Session here.

Prototype This!
Mike North (Mechanical) and Joe Grand (Electrical) talked about experiences with design, going over time and over budget on projects for the show. Projects like the Stair-bot and the ‘poo-bot’ that never made it to the show. They mentioned different challenges that face them during the design phase of the projects and testing, particularly on the 6×6 projects.

SolidWokrs Top Ten Enhancements

Bruce Holway, Manager, Product Definition

  • Brainstorm being used to gather enhancement request and product development ideas from users for complete transparency.
  • Over past 8 years, 70% of user requested enhancement made it into SolidWorks.
  • Recent examples – slot tool, clearance check, retaining dims in mirrored parts, propagating assembly features back into parts, Title Block Wizard.

This years top ten enhancement request

  1. Increase program stability
  2. Clear memory when file is closed
  3. Backwards compatibility
  4. Ability to rename configs
  5. Faster rebuild on complex models
  6. On-the-fly creation and editing
  7. Dual Monitor support
  8. Add Lock points for model rebuilds
  9. Abort any running command with Esc
  10. Excel Behavior in Tables

SolidWorks 2010 Preview
solidworks-2010 features

  • Update to Mirror Parts – no need to add single mate
  • Detachable View Mates box – Detached  from sidebar. Separator to see parent and child mates
  • New Design Study Tool – help choose best design based on optimization criteria set. In Motion Manager area. Cool looking.
  • Multibody sheet metal – sheet metal can now be created with multibodies. quick preview for flats updated dxf output.
  • New Reference Planes – two edges or axis, plane tangent to 2 cylinders, midplane between faces, tangent to face – angle to another plane
  • Assembly Visualization Tool – sort by custom property, control visibility based on custom property, purchase and manufactured, export to excel, change custom properties.
  • Configuration Builder – Create a builder to configure component features
  • Drawing Tools – annotations – add gtol into dims, notes – combine together with drag drop, balloons – control size with number, quantity next to balloon, BOMs function as Excel.
  • Drawing Productivity – Heads up display for dims, see and record previous dim edits. dims move out of way of others to prevent overlapping.
  • Direct Editing – automatically add dim when changing geometry, feature patterns update no matter which is changed, you can still change dims via FeatureManager.

Environment and Sustainable Design (SAGE)
SolidWorks is partnering with PE International to develop a Sustainable Design TaskPane that will enable engineers to determine the ‘environmental impact’ of their design.

A report can be generated then exported. It will be bundled with every license of SolidWorks starting in 2010. However it will be available for download at SolidWorks Labs Summer 09.
