Go with the Flow – Efficient Workflow with the 2009 Interface
Matt Lombard

Uh-oh. They’ve let Matt Lombard loose on the SolidWorks UI. What good could come from this?? Plenty, he takes an enjoyable, rabbit-trail look at just how to change anything possible with the new 08/09 interface, how he uses and what works best for different users and situations.

Here’s the highlights…

Smack Input
Since I kinda know Matt, I gotta say, I love his presentations. Great interaction and content. I think we work differently in SolidWorks, but we also have a lot of things we like and don’t like about the UI. For both of us, it seems to come down to not having the flexibility to customize area of the command Interface.

I’m sure SolidWorks is working on that.

Overall, his instructions will give you a lot of insight into the little details many overlook and no matter how you work, you’ll end up improving how you do. Rockin’ Matt.

Command Manager

  • Turn off  “Use Large Buttoons with Text”
  • 2009 – add toolbars next to Command Manager
  • 2009 – Dock Command Manager Top Right or Left
  • View, Workspace has options for Dual Monitors and Widescreens
  • Defualt Command Manager waste a lot of space
  • Scroll Mouse Wheel to cycle though tabs
  • Know your icons, helps with…

Left Mouse Button (LMB), Right Mouse Button (RMB)

  • Customize RMB with Tools, Customize, Options and Toolbar Context Toolbar Settings
  • Opinion: RMB without top toolbar is better
  • In FeatureManager click on icon instead of name to avoid going into rename mode

‘S’ Toolbar

  • Customizable Pop-up Toolbar
  • Add commands in via Tools, Customize, Commands
  • Flyouts create more clicks (Avoid flyouts!)
  • To find out where commands are assigned, Tools, Customize, Keyboard

Heads-up View Toolbar

  • Not a big fan
  • If it gets big enough, runs into icons in corners
  • Puts View toolbar next to Command Manager
  • Turn off HUV toolbar, right-click, deselect checkboxes
  • You can’t move it

Flyouts in Toolbars

  • Last thing you use stays on top

OVERTIME!!!!! Matt didn’t get a chance to finish up, but check out his blog, I’m sure he’ll make the presentation available
