Faster Death for Fleshy Humans. Robot Hands Get High Speed Actuators

by Josh on August 26, 2009 · View Comments

You know that point where robots become more agile than humans and then dead, lifeless bodies scatter the streets of the cities. Yeah, that is approaching, and you’ll love to see what’s putting it all in motion.

Ishikawa Komuro Lab has been busy over the past 10 or so years developing technology in high-speed visual information processing, optical information manipulations and, of greatest interest, adaptive multi-sensor architecture. What is that, you ask? Take a look at the video and be scared, be very a… scared.

They Sense You

They sense you… and can also throw a knife with pinpoint accuracy at your jugular vein (potentially). Stretching over the pat 10 years, Ishikawa Komuro Lab has developed, one of, if not the most dexterous, mechanized creations the world has ever seen.

Teaming with high power actuators and a harmonic drive gear each digit you see can move 180 degrees with 1/10th of second. Add the vision chip technology they also dabble in and you have one highly impressive robotic hand to do your bidding. The area of research is called Sensor Fusion and is aimed directly at “skillful manipulation” of, literally, anything you can throw at it.

The video shows the range of applications being tested, the latest of which is a throwing and batting system. That creates cozy thoughts doesn’t it? It’s amazing, and accurate, but what I end up watching over and over is the robot tossing a cell phone in the air… and then compensating to catch it. I’ll stop talking now so you can watch the video.

I cant do most of that…i have officially been outmoded and i'm pretty sure the robotic hordes will soon utilize me for spare parts. sadface

Well, we should be alright, until robots can start designing themselves…. Wait that is a really scary thought. Time to start building a big underground bunker with giant spikes on the exterior walls and an electromagnetic field around it that could be turned on in the event of the robots coming after you. But then again, I guess being underground may put you that much closer to the zombies. Damn, I guess we are all doomed. :(

That is actually happen to a degree. There is research into robots that can build themselves and even some production bots that can repair. You mix the Makerbot concpet with this and there's bound to be a bloodbath of epic scale. ;)

No you can't do most of that. I've seen you try to twirl a pencil. goodbye eyeskin. plus, they don't have the mind to action latency that our feeble human minds have to muster, and also they don't poo.
