Why does modern furniture have to either be expensive or low-quality? Such is the pressing question that a team of 9 designers from California-based online home goods brand SWENYO recently asked themselves.

Aiming to bring premium products that embrace a balance of form and function to today’s average consumer, the design team turned their attention to developing a versatile custom furniture collection that lets nomadic millennials and dollar-sensitive design geeks create ‘usable’ furniture with little more than some 2x4s that can be picked up with the neighborhood Zipcar van. The result is the UX4 steel bracket furniture kit.

Says SWENYO:

“Well-designed furniture usually comes with a hefty price tag. We want to bring this innovative kit to the people, not the select few, so our number one priority was keeping the price accessible without sacrificing versatility and style.”

With a weight capacity of up to 400 lbs, the DIY kit makes use of the most common building materials for users to create everything from dining or conference tables to even a workshop bench on the cheap.

The UX4 Bracket Kit includes 4 steel, powder coated (or raw steel) brackets, hardware and guidelines for a successful assembly. For those who don’t want to make a trip to the hardware store and haul back 2x4s, the company offers to send you pre-cut legs and surfaces for an additional (albeit small) fee.
