Necessity is the mother of invention some might say and the need to make optimum utilization of the limited space available in the refrigerator has given birth to many a great invention, such as this amazing new bottleLoft by product designer Brian Conti.
Billed as the ‘world’s first magnetic bottle hanger’, the slim organization system allows you to ‘loft’ those 6-pack or 12-pack of bottled root beers and more. Ultimately, the team behind bottleLoft wants to change chaos to order by simply utilizing the unused space at the top of the cold cabin.
According to Conti on the bottleLoft Kickstarter page:
Each bottleLoft is made of 8 parts of 4 different varieties:
- 3-custom sized neodymium magnets, grade N52, the strongest available
- 3-custom designed, custom machined steel cups to focus the magnetic strength
- 1-custom designed, injection molded plastic rail
- 1 strip of 3M VHB (very high bond) tape, a special low temperature application grade suitable for a refrigerator.
It makes sense that the so much of the focus in this design is the use of magnet assemblies and the adhesive configurations. To state the obvious, the bottles can’t come crashing down; it defeats the purpose of the product.
When considering the strength of the magnets, your typical 12 oz. drink bottle weighs around 1.2 pounds and since the design works against gravity, the magnets clearly need to be strong enough to not only hold the bottle but also allow it to hang and be removed without displacing the position of the product. The bottleLoft has been tested to hold a standard bottle cap and hook up to an additional 3.6 pounds.
The temperature of the fridge is generally 37 degrees Fahrenheit and to make sure the adhesive used to hold the magnetic strip is adequate, a special low temperature application grade of 3M VHB adhesive has been shortlisted.
