In this painfully long (almost 20 minute) video released by ‘Staples Office Centre’, we are given a glimpse into the future of how using Staples’ new 3D Print Service can dramatically change our lives…or in this case, replace a missing chess piece.

Despite the poor editing of the video (they have a marketing department, right?), we are able to see what Staple’s ‘vision’ of their service looks like. However what’s interesting is that the user (seen from a first-person perspective) in this video simply takes a photograph with his iPhone, uploads to the Staples website, and picks up his missing chess piece in a matter of minutes. Last time I checked, 3D printed pieces involved some sort of 3D data?

While the video is clearly just a glimpse into the possibilities of 3d printing aimed at the consumer market, here’s hoping that Staples makes it this easy when the service finally comes to the States.
