2021 is shaping up to be a year where previously announced technology from the pre-pandemic past starts coming out of the woodwork. The handheld Playdate console (which was supposed to release last year) has some new features and games, and now, Microsoft just announced the upcoming release of their new mini-fridge.
For many of you who don’t know what the major technology company is doing in the home appliance industry, let me give you a quick rundown:
Back in 2020, when Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X was announced, people commented that the console looked very much like a fridge. The comments churned out thousands of memes that Microsoft itself got in on the action by making its own fridge commercial:
Of course, this was meant as a joke. Apart from Snoop Dogg (yes, that Snoop Dogg) and one lucky winner who got the real thing, the Xbox Series X fridge was nothing more than a clever advertisement that capitalized on the Xbox hype train.
But just when all hope seemed lost, Microsoft announced at the 2021 Electronic Entertainment Expo that they were making a smaller version of the fridge for the general public:
Aptly called the Xbox Mini Fridge, this miniature version of the Xbox Fridge stands somewhere between an actual fridge and an Xbox Series X console. It features the multiple circle-etched top, the shiny Xbox logo on the door, and “Xbox Velocity Cooling Architecture”, which (I hope) doesn’t mean it cools with just a fan.
The inside of the mini-fridge is very green and looks like it can hold roughly 10 cans of your favorite energy drink, soda, or beverage of choice. The sliding door even has a small shelf where you can store those tiny bottles you find at motels!
Believe it or not, this meme turned appliance was the result of a Twitter brand war last April 2021. After tons of people voted down some of the best brands on the social media platform (Wendy’s, Pepsi, and Doritos among them), the final round saw Xbox and Skittles vying for the top spot.
Ok…here goes. Help @Xbox win this and we’ll put into production this year REAL XBOX SERIES X MINI FRIDGES! Yep, you read that right. Not an April Fools joke. Not clickbait. #Xbox #BestofTweets https://t.co/vm5B0kZht1 pic.twitter.com/A28hWBP3Db

In an attempt to get the edge on their competitor, General Manager of Xbox Marketing Aaron Greenberg tweeted that he would do everything in his power to make the Xbox Mini Fridge a reality.
Needless to say, Xbox won the brand war and is now putting the mini-fridges into production. The Xbox Mini Fridge will be out sometime this holiday season. And why?Because there is no better time to splurge money on something you don’t really need than the holidays, right?
