Well, well, well, from the looks of the last poll, not too many people care about hardware/software upgrade plans. I agree… BORING. For me, a hardware upgrade consists of bottling pure rage (and my new hot sauce recipe) to throw a computer 200 feet into the air.

So, while we’re on the topic of rage, lets do a really cliché poll about Microsoft’s hot new OS, Windows 7, that was made available last week. Maybe this one will get some more interests since Windows is sooooo much better than Mac, and Macs are soooooo much better than Windows.

Yes, completely contradictory statements and why you love SolidSmack a little more that a hard slap across the ear after gagging on a bean.

  • Josh - some of us run Winders on a Mac - through BootCamp... The survey omitted that category. ;-]

    With 64bit-capable Macs, and 12GB of RAM for my Adobe Creative Suite use, etc., it's time to unleash the power of my MacPro and thus REALLY start flying on this box with SolidWorks. XP is a joke, not able to see more than 3GB RAM. (What's THAT all about PC'ers?) Yea, Vista can see all the RAM... So what? Hellooooo? Vista? I'd rather do the H1N1 thing.

    So, in a few weeks, it'll be an upgrade to Snow Loopard (sic) for the proper BootCamp tools which are necessary for the Winders 7 upgrade - THEN comes SW2010.

    Upgrade upgrade upgrade. Maybe I'll have time for actual design.
  • ah yes. that's what meant by the 'I'm a Mac" option. I have update the poll to clarify that. Thanks! I'm XP right now....uhhhhhggg, 3gb BITES. I am thinking of the MAC route. You've got a good plan laid out it looks like. What's that all gonna cost ya?

  • hmmm hmmm. not too bad. I'd have to get the MBPro, and it'd have to be the honkin' big one, so tack a couple grand on to that.... still... PRICELESS. :)

  • True, but at the cost of buying another OS (my XP disc didn't have both 32 & 64 bit on it). So, why pay for 64bit XP only to eventually upgrade later to Win7 when a little patience will yield a better ROI? (SW won't support XP beyond 2010, so one way or another, itza comin')

  • awwww YEAH. I know what's on your mind. Have you seen the MSI's All-in-One Multi-touch? - needs a better GPU, but still cool to see these all-in-ones with multi-touch. SWEET.

    Nice, though. Looks like it will be usable in a horizontal configuration, which, as far as I can tell, is the only way make multi-touch real.

    We have a test box at work, and I am using it at home as my daily OS (Steam/Valve games means I must stay with Windows, likely forever). It is much better 'n vista, and finally uses all 64 bits of my processors!!$ w00t!!!$!$#!$
  • yep, big bennies on the bit usage. I'm waiting for a good laptop deal for my home computer.
  • Upgrading will apparently require that I move to a newer version of Solidworks. When I have the money to upgrade my Solidworks, I will upgrade my Windows.
  • what version are you on right now? If you're running on Vista, you should be good to go on Win7.
  • Couldn't reinstall windows xp because of missing drivers at setup, needed a floppy for it.....I'm on a laptop....THERE ARE NO FLOPPY DRIVES ON LAPTOPS!! AARG (frustration)
    So I installed windows 7. Still it is pretty sad that I upgraded because there old product failed on me not because the new one is way better, and I really think windows 7 is not that better then xp. It has a lot of stuff you don't need, which result in that the windows 7 dir that is 3 times bigger then the 3 year old xp dir. If your on vista(haha) then you should upgrade to windows 7, because win7 is not a pain in the ass as I find vista is.

    And about CAD I now run inventor 2009 student edition(64bit) without problems. I have windowsxp virtual machine (this doesn't work on al systems) for some old robot programming software. Haven't installed sw so don't know how that works.
  • Just as a note: Your poll does not work in Safari for Windows. The polling buttons do not show up. The polling buttons do show on the right side of the window, but not in the posting itself.
  • Thanks for the heads-up. It probably has something to do with the way it's embedded in the post. I'll look into it.

    Still on XP and plan to stay here as long as possible.
  • We're currently running 32-bit XP on all our rigs, when we upgrade some time in the future, I believe 64-bit Win 7 is a no-brainer.

    Say, does Win 7 still have those stingy driver requirements?
  • I avoid Windows like the plague. But if I used it, I'd be upgrading to 7. It seems to be the Best Windows Yet, for those who are into those kinds of things.
