The Importance of a Good Back-up System

It looks like a war zone in my neighborhood. Trees down everywhere.

Day 3
I’m dead in the water. The winter storm that came through Tulsa knocked out the power to half the city and has left a lot of companies kaput. Especially those that have all their data on one server, in one building.

So, all of our contractors, our satellite offices and employees that depend on data from that server cannot do anything because it’s off. The server is off, the phones are off and the remaining few of us that have power at home are trickling IMs to each other.

This has me thinking that a back-up server is in order, but what works the best?

If you have any suggestions throw them out.

Sorry to hear about the power outages. Times like this bring out the survivalist in me. I love it! Be safe!!
  • So sorry to hear you got smacked by the power outage. That happened last year here in the Saint Louis are twice. Once in the summer and again at the start of December. Areas to the west on north of Saint Louis got whacked this week, but we dodged the bullet. I hope they get your power up soon. Stay warm and safe.
  • Hi Josh,
Were all sorry to hear about the outages. Don't even think about using a generator unless you know how to hook it up to the house panel through a transfer switch. A 3 pole double throw switch is required to hook into the house wiring unless you just use extension chords to those appliances you need. Oil burner would be a priority of course. One tip I can give you. If you can drain your hydronic system down so the pipes won't freeze, if you have that kind of a hot water systme and radiators, do it very soon. As far as the toilets are concerned and it really hurts me to say this, pour some alchohol in the water closets and bowl to prevent them from expanding as they ice up. We have a generator for our house but I cannot afford the cost of an extension cord to send power to yours. Sorry buddy. Take care and bundle up.
  • Thanks everyone. I just got word late today that the power is back on, so tomorrow it's back to the office to clean things up and probably have a long weekend... unless we get more ice and snow that they are predicting!

I'm going to have a talk with IT and see what options they suggest for these types of emergencies.
