The headline was suppose to read Top Rockin’ Enhancement Request, but some weird lights flashed and suddenly I was cookin’ ramen noodles with Theo Jansen and Richard Doyle. So, the attendees of SolidWorks World submit enhancements, SolidWorks compiles them, they announce them at the final session, I talk a really blurry photo of them and decide it’s better just to write them out for you. So without further ado, here they are…

  1. Provide support for Dual Monitors
  2. Recreate all mates when mirroring components
  3. Undo should have a corresponding redo command
  4. Clearance check in assemblies similar to interference detection
  5. Ability to lock a configuration
  6. Mirror assembly features
  7. Ability to create a point at the center of mass
  8. Create more than one exploded view per assembly configuration
  9. Fixed length spline
  10. Allow adding ordinates in detail views based off the zero in the parent view

Which will be implemented?

83% of these will be implemented into future releases. Dual monitor support would be nice, but with all the peripheral technology coming out, at this point I’d rather see them working on support for touch screen monitor. I’m not just thinking Microsoft Surface or Mac stuff. Tablet computers are getting more common. GeTac has a nice one and Dell has the Latitude XT Tablet PC. But these are user request, so, soon enough huh?

Anyway, some of these are great. Personally I like, recreate all mates, more than one exploded view, and fixed length spline. Theo, I think you overcooked the noodles man.

RE:”Allow adding ordinates in detail views based off the zero in the parent view”

    Here’s my workaround for this;

    1. Fully Ordinate Dimension the View.
    2. Copy This View, The Ordiante Dimensions will also be copied.
    3. “Crop” this Copied View to look just like a Detail View. “Hide” the unwanted Ordinate dimensions.

    Cheers,
    Devon

Sorry, but LAME-O (new Ramen flavor, maybe?)

1)Gee, whip out the checkbook, not.
2)They promised the same exact thing last year.
3)Promised the same thing last year. Yes, they added the ability to undo sketch commands after exiting sketch, but they still left much to be desired.
4)Uh, who uses interference detection that much anyway? Half the time it can’t take into account flexible components, press-fit components, etc. The interferences that bite you in the butt are the ones where you didn’t bother to create the assembly and check it out.
5)Um, lock? No comprendo. Can you elaborate? Even still, it’s called being lazy and not checking all the configurations when you make a change to make sure everything is still intact.
    6)Don’t know ’bout that one.
7)Doesn’t Mike Wilson or someone already have a macro for that? I bet he/she doesn’t get a dime from SolidWorks for their work.
8)They promised that one last year too.
9)Break out the SeƱorial and let’s party. Uh, sorry, not that great
10)For crying out loud, why are we still talking about DRAWINGS when we should be pushing for ASME Y14.41 and GET RID OF DRAWINGS!!!!!

Wow, I’m cranky tonight, aren’t I? Maybe a nice bowl of Ramen stew would help me calm down?

I’ve lost my faith in this list. At best it is a customer list which is edited to remove sacred cows. Where is the suggestion to provide reverse compatibility or data exchange with Catia? Where are the quality type enhancements?

SolidWorks allows SWW users to choose from a list of stuff they have already decided to do.

Ya know, it made me think too, cause I see these topics, but haven’t been to World in a while. The topics seem so familiar, I’m thinking, is it rigged? I’m sure some are still requested, but I thought dual monitor support would happen 5 years ago when, imo, it was most important.

What would be incredible is if SolidWorks had complete transparencies on this. A list is too abstract. Instead of a list at the last session, I was hoping to see actual graphs or stats of where users were suggesting enhancements and then actual data that showed the most requested.

If there’s a top one they can’t do, just tell us, the technology isn’t there yet, but we’re gonna do this, this and this in the next version, and that one by 2010. Much easier to trust that.

This pertains to planning ahead from the assembly to the drawing…

Have a “Item No.” column in the “Display Pane”. Drawings are much easier and faster when one can use “item number” instead of “custom” when ballooning. We don’t export or include the BOM on the drawing. We use SAP for the BOM that is often created prior to the assembly drawing (based on older versions of similar assemblies). I normally create folders with like-parts and drag n drop to get components to match the BOM. An “Item No.” would visually help the reordering process.

He Jim, in 2009 you will be able to display a BOM in the model while you work. I can see advantages and disadvantages to that. I like your idea. It’s more simple. I hope you’ve submitted it in the enhancement request online. I’ve had to ‘pre-build’ assemblies as well and having a item number on the model could help. It goes along with doing everything in the model.
