SolidSmack Goes Comment Crazy, Uses Disqus Commenting System

by Josh on July 11, 2008 · View Comments

You may start to see some changes around the trusty ol’ SolidSmack site. For one, I’ve integrated the Disqus commenting system into the site. Sound fancy? It is, and it’s got some cool features that will make commenting 100% more fun than before.

I’m using the Disqus commenting system for a few reasons, but mostly because I think you’ll get the most value out of it and make the conversations even more meaningful, and who doesn’t want a meaningful conversation, huh?

Features include:

  • threaded comments
  • email & mobile posting
  • track and subscribe to comments
  • comment ratings
  • comment flagging
  • export your comments
  • and video commenting

I’m using a the Disqus WordPress plugin that was super easy to install. I had everything configured and was up and running in about 5 minutes. You’ll see the comments on old post with no comments as well as new posts (like this one).

You have the option of creating a user profile or commenting unverified. If you do create a Disqus profile you get to show off a photo in your comment and join in on the social network features and really, just enjoy it all a whole lot more. Here’s my Disqus profile.

So go ahead and test it out by leaving a comment below. Let me know what you think and if any features need to be added. Thanks!

Nice!

How easy is it to theme the disqus plugin?

maggiem July 11, 2008 at 10:04 pm

You can use CSS to style the disqus comments however you like.

I like the new commenting system already. If it works well, I hope some of the other SW bloggers will adopt it. Once again, Josh is on the move trying new technology and ideas.

Testing 1…2…3

Thanks Rod. I tested out several and decided to go with Disqus. I was going to start using it a while ago but they have an import feature that will be launched soon that sealed the decision.

It would be great if some of the other bloggers pick it up also. Alex Ruiz (SWGeek) uses Intense Debate, which is similar, but I prefer Disqus for the feature listed above.

Could be you Al… Go get yourself a webcam man! Alas, I do not have one either.

ok testing.

I definitely agree that the conversations are going up. 20+ comments alone
on the interface post. I like the direction it is going!

Bruce Buck July 16, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Bummer, doesn't show up at work. Blocked… Gotta wait 'til I get home to comment

I see that Alex Ruiz has now switched to Disqus also. It seems that you must have a secret cunning plan to get everyone to switch. Were you the one behind the “unsuitable” comments at Ricky Jordan's site?

Josh M August 31, 2008 at 12:07 am

Yeah, were all taking the comments over. :) I'm glad they have switched. We
can see who commenting on each others blogs. It really adds another layer of
inter connectivity to the blog community. I'm not sure about the unsuitable
comments on his site. I must have missed something!

Ricky Jordan August 31, 2008 at 12:13 am

LOL! Didn't realize the “unsuitable” description would cause such a stir. :-)

One of the reasons I switched to Disqus was to cut down on SPAM comments. I had a few making it through to the site, but had a TON to moderate in my Wordpress Admin panel. All has been much better in this area since I switched to Disqus. I LOVE IT so far!

Interesting post. I have stumbled and twittered this for my friends. Hope others find it as interesting as I did.

Pretty Sweet!!! Man!!! I got this for my website. I tried out Back Type and Intense Debate, too, but this had the cleanest feel to it.

Disqus has ability to import existing comments as well as export comments. I didn't lose any comments when I moved to Disqus..Disqus is really good stuff methinks!

Disqus is by far the best comment system that we can get for free. Besides having a lot of awesome gadgets it also has the best support there is.

Disqus comments are already among the most portable, enabling syndication through RSS, and into life-streaming applications of all sorts.
