Hello! if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the SolidSmack RSS feed or to the free email updates. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve just picked my monitor up off the floor and guess what I see underneath? The warm glow of a video showing some extremely cool sketch technology coming out of AutoDesk University this week.

You remember I (Heart) Sketch? The 3D sketch system that brings conceptualization back to a native hand-drawn environment. Amazing isn’t it? Well, AutoDesk has gone one step further. Video after the jump.

Ask the Reader: What Do You Love/Hate About Upgrading to SolidWorks 2009?

Ah, it’s that special time of year. That time of year when we consider the ramifications of firing a harpoon gun blindly into the air and also the pain of asking the IT department about upgrading to the next version of SolidWorks.

Point that spear away from the whirring server room and settle in. If you’ve upgraded from 2008 or previous to 2009, you probably have reasons for why or why not to do it. So, what’s your experience? What do you love or hate about upgrading to SolidWorks 2009?

or better yet…

If someone was still running SolidWorks 2008, what reason would you give them for upgrading or not?

Multi-Touch for Product Configuration. BMW Revs it Up.

Finally, I mean FINALLY were seeing some development come out with those fancy Microsoft Surface multi-touch displays and BMW is the company making it cool to have multiple appendages.

The ‘BMW Product Navigator’ allows those in the mood for a BMW to select options, colors, see video of their configurations and save it to USB to take home and show the kids after their racquetball lessons. Time for a test drive.

Hmmm. Product configuration done with a multi-touch input device. Interesting, don’t ya think? - Schmeer Schmeer video after the break.

Chik-Fil-A. Eat more… 3D Insects. Yum.

So much for inspiring kids to grow up becoming managers of salty, high fat, carb ridden fast food chains. Let’s inspire them to become engineers with the ability to bend biological matter (i.e. paperboard cutouts) to THEIR WILL.

Chick-fil-a is featuring ‘3-D Insect Models’ as toys in the Kid’s Meal. Cool - introducing small, hungry brains to 3-dimensional processes for create creatures they torment the neighbor kids with. How fun is that. Pics after the break.

Hey everyone. I’d just like to say thanks for reading, commenting, loving, hating, cheering, puking and pondering each post here on SolidSmack. I wish I could buy a turkey for everyone (and throw a cranberry at some) that make me wanting to keep doing this, at times with the incessant rage of a rabid beet farmer.

I know a lot of you now, but if I don’t, leave a comment! or check out the gang on Twitter. Either way, I’d love to meet more of you. Thanks again.

The Top 3D Software for Industrial Design… and Engineering?

industrial-design-solidworksIt may not be enough that you know how to sort desktop folders, write a cordial email or sketch a straight line, you may actually need to know some software that allows others to see what’s going on in the recesses of your analytically-primed imagination.

There are hundreds of software apps that help Industrial Designers and Engineers, but what do you need to learn to get a top position in the Industrial Design field? Photoshop and Illustrator would be on most people’s lists, but what about 3D?

SolidJott: Ya Know, For SolidWorks Users!

solidjott-solidworks-forumThere’s a new site that might get you an answer quicker that you can say, arrrrrrrGGGGH! to a SolidWorks VAR. It’s a new take on Tech Support from Ben Eadie of SolidMentor called SolidJott.

Ben says it’s simple and it is. You sign up and type a question. You don’t need a SolidWorks Serial number either. Will this make it more popular? The interface is like Twitter, but better because comments are threaded, you can add ratings and put tags on your question.

The only thing you can’t do is upload images or model files. That’s one advantage the SolidWorks forums have right away this, but if you want some quick help with some regulars from the forums already showing up, take a look.

Can the SolidWorks community handle another place to ask questions? Is this a better method?
