Trust me, you’ll want to remove yourself for a few moments from the pile of various material samples heaped upon your pale face. You may also want to clear out some space in your “Useful Resources” bookmarks.
The Material Information Society (ASM International), known for their material workshops, also has a very helpful material database to aid you in the next great product design or to simply help you remember what aluminum looks like. But viewing cool materials is just one aspect.
It’s aimed at showing you design methods, processes and most importantly, material properties. What’s particularly interesting and useful about this site is that it’s not only a material database. It features new materials, with thorough overviews and link to suppliers.
On top of that, if you’re looking for a certain application, like material for a ‘Chair’ or “Aerospace’ you can enter that in the Search for to narrow down the results.
Of course, there’s the dry, dusty air of the MatWeb material database that comes in handy from time to time, but you just can’t beat a pretty picture and a list of applications.

SolidSmack is a very small behemoth of an online community about 3D CAD, technology, design, robots, and ninjas… Ok, maybe not ninjas so much, but those guys are COOL so there just might be something about some dang ninjas.

Nice alternative to MatWeb. Thx for sharing the information with us!
Matweb sure hasn't aged well.
