SolidWorks World 2010… Whatcha Wanna Know?

by Josh on January 28, 2010 · View Comments

SolidWorks World 2010 is over… I jest, it actually hasn’t started, but a week from now at this time, it will be over and I, along with many others, will be dragging blistered feet from an Anaheim, California hotel bed to shed the light we gleaned from SolidWorks World on our friends, family and supermarket clerks.

There is some juicy news I’m thinking we’ll here about and some we will definitely be covering. So, what is it you wanna know? Here are a few possible topics and some things in general to be on the look out for.

- Top 10 SolidWorks Enhancement Requests
- SolidWorks 2011 Features
- CATIA translation
- Backwards compatibility
- Apple Mac compatibility
- 3D on the Web
- 3D Printing
- CSWP Event
- DS/SolidWorks Partnerships/Acquisitions
- James Cameron Keynote
- Partner Pavilion Tech
- SolidWorks World 2011

Over the next week, keep a eye on the SolidSmack feed, and if you’re on Twitter, be watching @solidsmack and the SolidWorks World hashtag #SWW10 for all the updates.

My feet always hurt at SWW to much walking. Can i wear flip flops and rent a scooter?

my mother tongue isn't english but stop smoking weed when writing an article: a week from know (from now). thinking we’ll here (we'll hear), Apple Mac comparability (compatibility?)

I would like to know if they are going to apologize for choosing a CPU based rendering engine over a GPU based rendering engine.

With Octane Render and a Board like the EVGA W555 you could have 7 GPU boards equaling 35 teraflops a score of 161 on the TOP500 list.
  • was reading about the EVGA earlier. won't be out till later this year, but I know what ya mean. MORE POWER! Still 7 GPU's would be a chunk o' change.

when of when will we get Mold Flow back!?!?!
  • Here's a few:

    *Future plans for rendering/animation integration.
*Future planse for 3D printing support and integration.
    *Integration with other PDM/PLM systems
*Future plans to be able to work with other 3D data (Maya, 3DSMax)
*Where are they going with interface (multi-touch, touchpad, 3D holograph, mind-control)
*Plans for business model (subscription services, more affordable solutions, etc)
  • Good ones Bruce!!
  • When can I push specific features (instead of "all axes" etc.) from master models to piece parts
When can I "replace" sketch entities so that all my references aren't lost.
When will SW let me make planes using a tangency to a surface (or any other way I want to for that matter)

That's news I would be interested in reading.
  • great topics. I'll keep my ears open. On the first one, have you tried smart features? on the other two, are you using 2010? It handles references a little better and has a ton more ways to create planes (40+ I think.) I can quickly grab a surface and a point to get a tangent plane. should I do a post on it?
  • Client still has me in 2009... if 2010 allows for replacing/rerouting references, i'd love to see a post on it.
  • It would be nice to have a specific focus report on hardware for 2010 and beyond. As I discussed on previous discussions, I am right now trying to make the best investment for a workstation to run 2010 on. Is Windows 7 64 bit the answer ? Which graphics card is the best value ? Which vendor HP / Dell or other. I see MAC in the possibilities, what types of problems will that have ? I for one would love to actually see some sort of UNIX based systems come back. Back then it was clean and easy.
  • "best investment for a workstation to run 2010 on" - noted. I'll be looking at the same and am also considering what's going to be the best for 2011/2012 as well. This is a big hardware upgrade year for me, so looking a couple years down is important. Do I wait for the next GPU or go with one already out/tested? I'll be on the lookout. thanks.

I wanna know where you'lll be at to get a sticker this year! I'm thinking CSWP Party... I mean Event. looking forward to meeting you.

The CSWP party sucked hairy sweaty salty balls! WTF? The band sucked like a crack hoe! I never liked raw roast beef!

I mean really what the purpose of being a CSWP when theirs more happening at the Partner Pavilion? My RC days were over when i was 12. I stayed about 5 minute and burnt off (went to HollyWood and got wasted & layed). At least in San Diego they gave us SolidWorks jump sticks. They didn't even have enough Rc's for every body to use.

Let me plan the CSWP party next year! If i do it THEIR WILL BE GOOD LOOKING WOMEN THEIR WITH LIQUOR! The beer will be for marinating the bar b que meat (NO BLOODY RAW ROAST BEEF SAMITCHES). If your a CSWP you will be required to take a liquor shot of your choice before you enter the party. EVERY CSWP WILL GET A AWESOME GIFT!

And this is the type of person SW is inviting to the conference. No wonder the conference seems to have nose dived right into the comode. I would remove this persons post and try to keep this web site and blog spot professional. Not what real people want to read or see. I guess having a party and some games is focusing on the next generation like video games do. See what rises out of the heap beacuse they did not get liquor or a car to play with. Sad Sad Sad.
  • Not so much invited, but he did pay to attend. I actually think the conference has gotten better over the years. There's been some bad tech sessions and keynotes, but I think the overall it's been a great value for me from a user/admin point of view. all the other stuff are a sidenote to the people who are there that I increasingly find one of the best aspects of the conference, even if they are a little rough around the edges.

On a side note, I've been playing with one of the 'toy cars' that were at the CSWP event. Designed in SolidWorks and after looking it over and driving it, it really is an interesting piece of engineering. pretty simple too. and it's been great using it to teach my 3 year old son about design and engineering. awesome.
  • I had a good time. Woulda been nice to have it outside on dirt tracks though. That band definitely never needs to play Prince ever, ever again.
  • I'll have a few. kinda suck. was gonna get some new ones made, but ran outta time. I'll save one for ya!
  • rjensen
I'll be watching from home, so just keep me in the loop....:-)
  • will do Rob! wish ya could be there!
