SolidWorks announced at SolidWorks World 2009 the enormous plans of helping every ailing engineer that has meet the cold hand of unemployment. The SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package (ESP). Here’s the latest Engineering Stimulus Plan details from Mathew West over at the Dassault 3D Perspectives blog.

- Any unemployed design professional will be able to register and download a Personal Edition copy of SolidWorks online. The license is good for 90 days, and will be renewable once. There will also be a watermark preventing the software from being used for commercial purposes.
- The software will be accompanied by extensive training materials that a current SolidWorks user can use to sharpen his or her skills. People new to SolidWorks should actually be able to use these materials to learn the application and become proficient. Which leads to the next part.
- Once the user is comfortable with the application, he or she will get a chance to take the Certified SolidWorks Associate test for free. We’ve found that employers actively seek people with SolidWorks certification, and applicants with a CSWA (or CSWP, the next step up) certification stand out in the interview process.
Unfortunately, this won’t be set up so you can start that hill country consulting biz you’ve always wanted to. It will help you keep you as spry as a three-legged raccoon in a demolition derby, keeping your SolidWorks skills up and even learning some new stuff. Any questions about this? What would be even better
On top of this, it would greatly help if SolidWorks worked with the VAR’s to get anyone in the program in front of companies that are using SolidWorks. It’s just one more way, a much easier way, to help people get back into the marketplace.
Things you better be doing
In the meantime, instead of waiting for this, get off your haunches and start acting:
- Update/Create your LinkedIn profile. Get recommendations.
- Contact a reseller. let them know the situation. Give them your info.
- Connect with users. Online via Twitter. or a User Group. or the Forums.
- Try consulting. There’s Guru.com or your own hard work promoting yourself. Go after it.
- Try doing something you love. Not that sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours isn’t enjoyable. Build something.

SolidSmack is a very small behemoth of an online community about 3D CAD, technology, design, robots, and ninjas… Ok, maybe not ninjas so much, but those guys are COOL so there just might be something about some dang ninjas.

Something I neglected to mention in the above-referenced post is that this is only good in the US and Canada for the time being. I'll go update tha tnow.
Good idea! Downloading illegal is still way faster but not having to do something illegal is a good thing.
In the Netherlands you could download a student edition with lessons so there something here to you only have to find it.

Smart move by SolidWorks, would be way cool if they had a gallery of what people made with the trial as a way to get the unemployed in front of potential employers. Good for them.
It would have been nice if they'd extended the Student Edition offer to unemployed engineers. That's two years for about $100. Personally, I'd rather have paid a nominal amount for a longer license, but maybe I'm just pessimistic about the job market..!
90 days is certainly better than a kick in the pants and SolidWorks should be applauded for launching this.
