What would you do if you were off in Ethiopia waiting in a guest house to adopt your third child?
If I thought long and hard I probably wouldn’t have come up with what Caleb Stolls did. I don’t want to tell his whole story but basically he created an model and animation of the guest house to help people planning trips to the location. You get the layout of the rooms with photos… and he even added a groovy world rhythm to boot.
Here’s the video, but check out his post and let him know what you think.

Yesterday was sort of a blow off day on the Blog/News scene. You gotta pretty much figure that half the stuff you read on April 1st is gonna be bunk. While a lot of people think it’s complete idiocy, it’s also a chance to lighten up and see different aspects of how people think or what they can come up with.
Some of the stuff you can actually learn from too. I did the animal fur post, not even thinking; pure random thought vomit. But when I saw some comments and actually looked at it again, it made me think of all the drawings I see on a daily basis that do exactly what I did. Somehow though, it’s acceptable to say “Trim to Fit, Paint to Match” and leave any reference to woodland creatures out of it.
Likewise, you go over to Mike Puckett’s post and you get a verbal caricature of some of the people in the CAD scene. Yearly events, that have come to create interaction more and more online, paint a picture you don’t usually see and they’re just fun to be involved in. It’s great to meet some new people in the comments and on Twitter.
I’m glad a lot of you commented on those posts and I appreciate the emails I got too. Rockin’

Just about everybody wishes SolidWorks could do this or that or complains that it doesn’t do something really cool. I could throw down a list of things I don’t like, but that’s just makes the selection of fresh organic produce seem even worse than it actually is. Which is actually better than the selection of ripe avocados.
This is a list that started out as complaints actually, but I looked at it, looked at again, watched some movie trailers, ate an organic cookie and decided to write the following list instead.
Maybe it’s more of a, “what if?”, but it got me thinking about a lot of things. What do you think?
I wish…
SolidWorks could be web-based.
we could update hardware as often as software.
the model could be the drawing.
data management could be web-based, graphical and simple.
others using SolidWorks could provide comments on my model in real-time.
we could browse model history instead of clicking and dragging though it.
we could develop a model in it’s environment.
we could use more than a single button to sketch geometry.
SolidWorks had a relationship with a certain coffee shop so we could get a discount.
I could create a feed for my project I can track anywhere.
What do you think SolidWorks could be?

I came across what is probably the most interesting job title I’ve seen associated with SolidWorks. A SolidWorks Visualiser.
It’s on a job posting out of Northern England and is listed in the Creative Media Industry. The pay for this is 25k-30k pounds (50k-60k USD) full-time.
The job description reads like a typical engineering position. If your interested, check it out.

That crazy orange SolidWorks Real logo is at it again and I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep till I find some answers.
If you get the SolidWorks Express Newsletter, it probably popped up in your inbox yesterday around 9:58 a.m. when your at the peak of efficiency. They have a nice photo of some windmills and something about the environment. But what interested me is that little orange real logo.
Who’s in charge of putting that thing there? How many locations do they try? why orange? Yes, these are the things that matter.

I’m stoked. I think she’ll be in charge of graphics and letting me know when I’ve been on the computer too long. If anybody has tips on raising girls please tell me or send me reading material.

I’m feeling kind of queezy right now. You would think I received a gory email forward from a friend when I’ve actually just listened to the original studio recording of ‘Running With the Devil’ by Van Halen… minus the background vocals and music; pure David Lee Roth bliss.
If you can scream like that, I would do it right now and let everyone around you know how jaggedly wicked your voice is. Here’s the vocals and it’s even funnier if you imagine the faces hes making. He really hits it around 2:30.

Time for Vodka, cigars and feedback. If you’re a customer that is in regular contact with SolidWorks you may have received an email inviting you to be part of a private SolidWorks community called Real Insights.
It’s hosted by Communispace who set up these cozy communes to allow companies to interact with a select group of customers. But it’s more than just a fun-loving community of CAD users, you’re plugged into THE SYSTEM. Communispace’s “social scientists and data mining experts [are] dedicated to uncovering new patterns and trends in online community behavior and customer engagement.”
Creepy? Actually, very interesting I think. I have sensors stuck all over my profile, but SolidWorks is actually getting real-time information about my feelings and desires… wait, that is creepy. However, it will be interesting how this small group shapes product development.
When you sign up you go through a survey with a NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) at the end. What do you think? Is it better to get feedback from a small select group or from every possible customer?

Ok, SolidWorks World 2008 is coming up and if you’re not going you probably don’t care so much. If I wasn’t going I would either be filled with jealousy or completely disinterested.
Nonetheless, it’s going on and a bunch of crazed SolidWorks users and people vying for your business will be out in full force. But really, need I go on.
Instead here’s some photos of what you’ll see or may miss in San Diego because you’re in a cubicle or technical sessions all day.
