yeah, what is up with that. Dassault has some very strict license agreements. I remember their blog had a really strange one at some point and they ended up changing it.

Looks cool, but did you check out the license agreement (nobody bothers these days). YIKES! Not very Sketch Up like here. Dassault must love their lawyers.

As mentioned below, MS now has Truespace, but perhaps more relevant is that 3DVia is tied to MS's Virtual Earth. This is potentially of greater interest since 3DVia appears to be the beginnings of a nexus for the CAD world and a mirror world. That may soon mean that companies like Whirlpool won't bother using SketchUp – uploading their products to a Google Warehouse for use in Google Earth as a subtle means of advertising – but will simply move their CAD data from a Dassault application onto a shared online host.

Well 3Dvia is useless unless they put ability to save the models to own disk and in a convertible format. I never touched and will not touch it because of that. For that well MOI is trillion times superior despite the price.

Microsoft Does have a free modeling program, TrueSpace, quite powerful but a bit of a love hate learning curve for the interface. But it is free.

yeah, totally different market is going to see these two, but for anyone that knows of them both will be tempted to try Shape. IF anything I hope it will grow the competition, enhance the technology they are trying out for these programs and see what the users get out of the features. Great 'free social 3D CAD programs' regardless of the difference.

aww shucks, thanks Don. I gotta say, I'm liking what 3DVia is doing. In the past I wished they had gone with a relationship with Google as opposed to Microsoft, but now I'm reserving judgment to see how each bring 3D into the forefront even more. loving the 3DVia effort. I bet it's exciting to be a part of.

Thanks for keeping us up to date Josh. Yes, I work for 3DVIA, but I appreciate that you always keep me up to date on so many different subjects that relate to 3D modeling. You bring a balanced view with a heap of attitude – excellent mix!

Its a bit unfair to compare this to SketchUp. SU deals with a different market and in that market is by far the clear leader and has changed the way an entire profession uses 3D tools…..and this was before Google bought it. One of the key elements of SU is the presentation side – the sketch in fact. something that 3DVia doesn't address.

Personally I struggle to see the benefit 3DVia brings aside from maybe providing a test bed for new interface features in CATIA perhaps, and as you say the 3D tools are not pitched at any market in particular (whereas SU tools are pitched excactly at the AEC market).
