3D SpaceNavigator Contest Update: More to Win!

Hello! if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the SolidSmack RSS feed or to the free email updates. Thanks for visiting!

If you haven’t made a comment to win the 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator, you have until tomorrow morning to add one! The comments so far have been an interesting look at what some think the future of CAD might be or how they would use this handy device. You can see them below and if you add had a website I provided a link.

On top of this I have $15 Dollar iTunes Gift Card that someone will also pickup. Again, just add a comment to let me know how you’ll use the SpaceNavigator or follow me on Twitter! The winners will be announce tomorrow at noon (CST).

What do you think?
Future of CAD…?? I think it will be like the ipod touch interface. Using your fingers to do the walking…! - Rob J

I would like to see maybe fewer releases, possibly one every two years, but have a more stable product that does not require constant service packs after it’s release. - Joe

I seriously want to use this 3D mouse with SolidWorks on my MacBook Pro…. and save my right hand all that extra zoom/pan/rotate work - Ivan

I see the future of cad being good.…thats all, I make very vague predictions so I’m always right. - Kyle Mason

The future of CAD??? Neural Interface — Jack in just like the Matrix! - Brian Titus

The future of CAD is 42. I plan to rig up the 3d mouse to control my toilet….through controlled flushes I’ll be able to conserve water… - Jason Capriotti

The space navigator is just what I have been waiting for. With only one arm to do my CAD and other computer work. - Diane P

I see holographic displays (The university I attended already has one, but us peons can’t afford it, and it takes up an entire room). I still see 2-D input devices, however. I just don’t think humans have enough haptic control to do real 3D input. So I think the meat and potatahs of the software is mostly there! We just need some hardware upgrades to get us better interfaces. - Charles Culp

I just want it so I can be the cool new kid at work with the crazy contraption everyone is super jealous of. - Bryan Journey

I just want tomorrow’s CAD to work on today’s high end computer. - MikeO

I just want to be as cool as all my co-workers who have one. - Chris Muenzer

The future of CAD will be generally in space. I don’t mean space outside the Earth’s atmosphere, I mean space above your current desktop. Imagine if you will, a machine that will be able to project a very high resolution 3D holographic image above your current desktop box. You’re still going to have to do I/O on a keyboard but all the graphics will be holographic in nature and very high resolution. - Steve Calvert

Future of cad will be open source. - JollyRoger

You will be designing in a virtual world. You will work in the place where your product is needed. If you need to build a machine you will be making it in virtual but exactly the same place tools will be your bare hands. For small designs you could shrink yourself for really big designs you could scale yourself up. Gravity can be manipulated in this virtual world so you can design for mars standards. - Marijn

Hoping to use this thing together with my just bought tablet pc - Martin

How about this, Josh? We don’t have time to wait for the future of CAD. We need it today, here and now! Reliable, robust, faster and, oh,yes, why not affordable too? - GabiJack

The future of CAD will be smacked into my head on a Daily Basis. - Daniel

Basically do it all online… load nothing locally. Sure makes collaboration easier! - Jeff K.

If I win it I could use it to make 2 web sites in dreamweaver. one for a solidworks related help site with tutorial videos and the other for my evening and weekend 3d design business that I’m planning to start. - Dorian

The future of CAD will be … CAD obviously. Clay assisted design. - Paul S

I may be uncreative and boring, but I’d like to see CAD that is stable, does what it’s supposed to do well without excessive flashy capability that’s not really capability because it doesn’t work. - Craig S.

When I think about future CAD, I think about holographic displays and voice recognition. So I guess I do not see the use for an input device. The way I see it, the input would be voice and actual manipulation of a 3D holographic shape. - Eddie

Future of CAD? I’d go for a world where I can put on a real “thinking cap”, think what I want to see on the screen and have the software model it. - James Spisich

The future of CAD will be crazy. We won't even have a keyboard, mouse, or any other input devices. We'll just think what we want to do and control it with our brains! Although until then, I'd love to have a 3D mouse. I'm a TA for the ENGR Design class at Oregon State U and it would be great to show the students what this device can do. Also, I'm a typical broke college student...help?

CAD in the future will be easy to learn and use.
Complex designs can be output with relative ease.

I think that rather than wishing myself out of a job by beaing able to think about the part I want and have it drawn for me, I would like to see the future of CAD be all about solid modeling, and have the ol' 3 view made for me 100% automatically, that way I could get my modeling done, and skip straight to the golf part of my day!

Future CAD will be a combination of the virtual environment and the tactile possibilities of 3D printing. No more plans on paper, no more compatibility problems, no more heavy workstations!
We'll all go to mobility, instant creating and visualizing, complex machine items which can be printed and no longer have to be machined! Todays coating technologies will be optimised to use a plastic carrier and to apply the needed coatings to give the strength.
    Looks amazing, the future!

I believe that the 3DConnexion mice are just a glimpse into what the future of CAD user interfaces and input devices has in store for us. At the rate hardware is advancing, the possibilities almost seem endless. I envision a world where designers can manipulate parts assemblies in a 3D 'virtual reality' environment; think holideck from StarTrek. An environment like this would allow for huge advancements in fit and function scenarios that current rapid prototyping methods cannot handle, as well as a whole new level of FEA analysis capabilities. The most challenging of today's design problems may one day be able to be 100% prototyped in a virtual environment with real life physical dynamics. It sounds sci-fi, but think of how many of the technologies we already have today would have sounded 10 or 20 years ago. I believe the future will only continue to amaze us.
