More CAD processing done on graphics cards - rendering is obvious, simulation will follow. Yeah I'm not thinking big, but I'm thinking this will happen in the next couple of years.

At the end of the decade I think graphic cards as they are now won't exist. Mergers between ATI and AMD and partnership between Intel and Nvidia means that we'll see more integration between the CPU and GPU as they each take on processing tasks they're actually good at.

Of course I'm hoping someone will come up with a practical quantum and/or light-based processor in the next decade but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks Derreck. I had some thoughts about CFD and analysis. I kind of eluded to it in the very last thought of design, engineering and manufacturing happening simultaneously.

Really, if you got me going on this... my prediction that in the decade after, 10-20 years out, we'll have new materials that will allow analysis to occur as the product is being physically formed during the design. It's not one step after the other. It's like turning cloud overage on the animated forecast map on weather.com :)

hey Jon, I agree on #4. I with ya man. I prefer the direct download, even for the large files. sign-up, buy, download, simple. I don't think that's fully going to take hold till the next ten years, but I hope I'm wrong.

Rendering. I'm becoming more familiar with what's available in this area and it's one hurdle that is keeping me from switching completely to using a laptop. Maybe quantum computing will get to where we need it this decade.. I kinda doubt it though.

Thanks for the comments!

Fax machines are here to stay. Why? I don't know. They were a transient technology that was outdated 15 years ago. But for some reason they will never die.

#4: is a nice idea but as we see with many software companies today, online download is where it's going more and more. I bought my first video game via software download about a month ago, got my Poser stuff via digital download, 3DS Max etc. are all cheaper to buy (though not by much yet) via digital download. Screw the disks, thumb drives etc... just give me the software in a few hours and I'm a happy man!

#7: I'm anxious as heck about this as I'd love to have all my site's animations in real 3D... it would be amazing... and working/designing in TRUE 3D on my monitor would be AMAZING! There are so many applications for this technology... I can't wait!

What I would love to see happen though is faster rendering, I got the equivalent of an 8 core laptop now and guess what, it's only rendering at 50% faster than my previous two core one it has replaced! This is nuts! Sure, I'm rendering in HD etc... but still, why can't this stuff be optimized to heck so it doesn't take a week to render a somewhat decent animation? I was so excited to see the Cell a few years ago... incredible technology... but why don't they offer this as an option for us 3D guys who do lots of rendering on laptops? I'm sure it would render my stuff as if I had a 40 core machine!

Great predictions, hopefully they all come true! I'm done with my rant.

Jon @ WoodMarvels.com
