It’s Here. iTracer Puts 3D CAD… On the iPhone.

Ok, so it’s here. The first attempt at on a mobile device that just happens to be developed by Apple. Oh yeah, and the there’s the thing.

Fabio Policarpo currently working as a Senior Engineer at DoubleFine Productions, a game developer in San Francisco, California. Who knows the motivation he had behind creating this, but it’s simple, cool and will no doubt open up a lot of ideas about where to go next. Here’s the details.

iTracer is a 3D modeling and rendering application for the iPhone that enables the end user to model objects from basic primitives manipulating their profiles and edit down to per-vertex normals. Then you can you render your models in high-quality images complete with transparency, refraction, shadows, reflection and self-illumination.

yeah, uh-huh, and get this…

Using Apple’s interface on the iPhone you interact with the modeling process via typical modeling tools such as translate, rotate, scale, revolve and extrude.

and how are they doing the license and updates?

iTracer cost just 3.99. USD and a new license gets you all future updates for free.

The app can be downloaded here

I’m finishing an article that has something to do with this topic. What’s your opinion of and ?

  • Dean on Video. making the point of the century like nobody else could. yeah, Apple brought on multi-touch. now it's up to everyone else (HTC, Google, HP, heck even Microsoft with Windows 7) to knock'em sideways from sunday and make it accessible to everyone else.
  • yup - straight from the dungeon at d3d towers.. I love apple laptops, for some that writes as much as I do, the keyboard is worth the investment before I get all clawed up like emperor palpatine and they have to prize my blackberry out of my cold dead hands..

multitouch looks cool - but for CAD? I ain't so sure.. and there's one very good reason (actually, two).. RSI and bloodflood... unless its a tablet style implimentation..

hope you're taking a rest dude

Just downloaded it and played around a little. I'm very impressed. I don't know if this is really useful for anything, but wow, I love the idea of multitouch CAD. The interface on this actually pretty well thought out. If it had more powerful tools and I could put it on a bigger screen, there's no way I could go back to using a mouse.
  • multi-touch CAD.... be watching for the next issue of Develop3D. I did an article on that very topic. I think some things in hte future are realyl going to surprise some people. who needs a flat screen for 3D? :) It will change.

'no way I could go back to using a mouse' - my 2 yr old used a iphone... once. he's constantly trying to move things on a laptop screen. isn't that interesting.
