freitag-bags.jpgGeez man! how many papercuts do you have!? That’s disgustingly retched! I mean, you may need some ointment or a skin transplant!… or these useful links.

Freitag.ch - A bag shop. Buy or design your own online. These will make you look incredible.
StickerGiant.com - The best place, at least my favorite place, for stickers. WAY better that going to Kinkos and getting rubbish for SolidWorks World.
SwissTrains.ch - When I lived in Switzerland, trains were the way to travel. Imagine having this on your portable. Travel is changing.
Tokiva.com - cheap, great-quality international. It cost $.027/min to call someone I meet from Australia at SolidWorks World.
ForWebDesigners.com - 521+ helpful links for web designers or if you’re interested in it. Actually helpful links with good content.

Pure Inspiration: Interview with John ‘Muggs’ Ferguson

muggs.jpgPerhaps the coolest thing about SolidWorks World is all the people you can meet. People that change things and know what the heck they’re doing. I had to privilege of speaking to a SolidWorks user and entrepreneur. The John Ferguson, aka Muggs, of John Ferguson Design.I didn’t get a photo of him, so I stole one from one of Matt’s posts. Thanks Matt.

I talked with him a lot more during the conference and if you ever get to meet him, you will be inspired.

How long have you buttered the bread with SolidWorks?
4+ years. Since October of 2003.

What kind of insanely cool products do you design?I “grew up” in the toy industry and I still do a lot of work in toys.
I do a lot of different stuff. I am involved with two companies that make automotive aftermarket intake and exhaust manifolds for super chargers and turbo chargers, I “grew up” in the toy industry and I still do a lot of work in toys, and I’ve done some medical device work. Lately I started to work in the furniture world, that’s a whole different ball of wax! Pretty much anything that keeps the heater running and food on the table.

You have your own design business. Have you always been independent or was there a point you felt the cubicle walls closing in that inspired you to go out on your own?
I worked at RJ Studios for 12 years as a modelmaker then as a designer. I was laid off in October of 2003 and decided that I would try to go it on my own and I have never looked back.

What’s the toughest part about starting and having your own design business?
I have always wanted to be in my own business but I was unwilling to walk away from a paycheck. Several years before I was laid off I purchased SolidWorks and started to do a little freelance work on the side and try to “slide into” a business. Well, when the paycheck walked away from me it made the “slide” a lot easier. In fact it was now time to sink or swim.

Do you think using SolidWorks opened some possibilities for you or is it all your charm?SolidWorks has gone from a parametric modeler to having some darn fine surface capabilities.
Yes, I’m sure much of my success is due to my charm! But seriously, yes SolidWorks is a huge part of why I’m still in business after 4 years. I focus on “swoopy” parts (yes I hate that term too, but it gets the point across) so I am “the surface guy” with some of my clients and that’s fine with me. SolidWorks has gone from a parametric modeler to having some darn fine surface capabilities. Now I know I’ll catch some flack for that, and I know that SolidWorks could greatly improve, but to be honest I have never been unable to deliver because SolidWorks couldn’t do what I wanted.

As someone who’s highly active in the SWX community, what is missing?
Tutorials! There’s no question. If you were to purchase Rhino today, there are literally hundreds of Rhino tutorials around. But look at any SolidWorks forum and what do you see from first time posters? “Are there any tutorials for SolidWorks”. And the answer is yea some but not a lot and not in any one place.

What would you say to someone that says, “Engineers are not creative?”
Well that’s just crazy! I know from being a modelmaker for more than 15 years before I got into design that the people that make things are some of the most creative people I know. Trust me when you work in the toy industry and you have to make an RC car do 10 different things and put 5 Lbs of crap in a 2 a Lb bucket, you’ll get very creative.

Two final questions, The internet certainly effects how we do business. How do you think CAD or the business of design will change over the next few years?
Wow! I think you should ask Matt (Lombard) this question. I stopped trying to guess what’s going to happen a long time ago. I’m wrong every time. What I would like to see happen in relation to the internet is a place that someone new to SolidWorks can go to get some help.

As I mentioned earlier, Rhino has many places that a “newbie” can go for help, but I think SolidWorks lacks that. Rhino (again as a great example) has [Rhino support has] a news server that’s dedicated to the world of Rhino and Rhino employees not only frequent it but actively participate in the discussion. I think SolidWorks tried to do that with their Customer Portal and the Forum there, but I don’t think it works as well. I think that maybe it’s the “customer” part that’s the problem. Maybe it should be a USERS Portal with no login just come and ask away.

What would you recommend to others interested in design and engineering that want to start their own business? You’re not rich the first $20,000 check you get and you’re not “out of business” the first time you don’t have work for three weeks.
Get a routine and stick with it. I made myself be very disciplined about getting up and getting going early in the morning, even if I had nothing to do that day. The best advise I got when I started is that you’re not rich the first $20,000 check you get and you’re not “out of business” the first time you don’t have work for three weeks. Things in business ebb and flow, and the sooner you figure that out the better off you’ll be.

SolidWorks World Top Ramen Enhancement Requests. Which Implemented?

top-ramen-enhancement-reque.jpg

The headline was suppose to read Top Rockin’ Enhancement Request, but some weird lights flashed and suddenly I was cookin’ ramen noodles with Theo Jansen and Richard Doyle. So, the attendees of SolidWorks World submit enhancements, SolidWorks compiles them, they announce them at the final session, I talk a really blurry photo of them and decide it’s better just to write them out for you. So without further ado, here they are…

  1. Provide support for Dual Monitors
  2. Recreate all mates when mirroring components
  3. Undo should have a corresponding redo command
  4. Clearance check in assemblies similar to interference detection
  5. Ability to lock a configuration
  6. Mirror assembly features
  7. Ability to create a point at the center of mass
  8. Create more than one exploded view per assembly configuration
  9. Fixed length spline
  10. Allow adding ordinates in detail views based off the zero in the parent view

Which will be implemented?

83% of these will be implemented into future releases. Dual monitor support would be nice, but with all the peripheral technology coming out, at this point I’d rather see them working on support for touch screen monitor. I’m not just thinking Microsoft Surface or Mac stuff. Tablet computers are getting more common. GeTac has a nice one and Dell has the Latitude XT Tablet PC. But these are user request, so, soon enough huh?

Anyway, some of these are great. Personally I like, recreate all mates, more than one exploded view, and fixed length spline. Theo, I think you overcooked the noodles man.

SolidWorks World 2008 Fin

I’m Irish pubbin’ it out at the DFW terminal trying to recuperate from the last three days. Tired, exhausted, can’t wait to get home but what a blast.

I have 78 different things across 7 categories I’ve started compiling. That’s way to many. If there’s something about world you’re particularly interested in, hit the comments, or tell me to can it and get back to regular post about auto toilet paper dispensers and random crap.

SolidWorks Gets Super Ipod-ified. Site Needs Help.

greypod-nano.pngBellissimo! You lika the ipod nano, yes? It is like cute puppy, yes?

Today, all the attendees at SolidWorks World got an ipod nano. 4,699 ipod nanos prepackaged with the goodness of SolidWorks marketing material to show your mama and your papa.

This is all part of the new Real Solutions campaign to generate some buzz about SolidWorks via podcasts and video, but it’s not all marketing hype. It’s there to help you too.

Sure you can put your favorite Dead Kennedys songs on there, but in addition to that you can buck the system via the SolidWorks ipod companion site with downloadable 1-minute tips, videos, web apps (currently just one for the iPhone) and wallpapers of pretty products.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects is the referral program they’ve set up. You get free hardware.

For each referral who invests in SolidWorks software, we will send you the next component of your Ultimate SolidWorks Home Office.

However, some things on that site need improved.

Some site reccomendations for the SolidWorks iPod Nano Promo Site

  • Set up your titles! You have something viral with the ipod nano and the title reads ‘index‘ or ‘SWW_sometihng’?
  • The Share with Friends link? Email??? Hello? Allright, but you need others. Try ShareThis.
  • Add to favorites?? bookmarklets are allright too, but what about Digg, de.licio.us, magnolia, faves, etc. Try AddtoBookmarks
  • Where’s the feed? I assume this is gonna have regularly updated content. Feed needed stat.

All in all, rockin’ cool.

SolidWorks World 2008 General Session Intro Animation

Ok, since this new social web thingy is all about putting up really low quality video that is almost annoying to watch, I’ve done my part by getting some video of the SolidWorks World General Session Intro Animation with a 2.0 Megapixel camera.

Use your imagination to scale this 100,000 times, remove the graininess and put the music in stereo surround.

SolidWorks 2008 on a 4GB USB Flash Drive

solidworks-on-a-thumb-drive.jpg

I know, my hand is beautiful in a pasty sort of way, but that isn’t important. That orangish thumb drive between my digits has SolidWorks 2008 running off it.

It uses Thinstall application visualization to lock and load the software.

By packaging with Thinstall, the application has all files, libraries, components, and data that it needs to run, in a single EXE.

Another thing. It only takes up 2GB, so I have nearly another 2GB to store files. Huge. Software delivery and usability all rolled into one.

The lowdown
All the CSWP’s (Certified SolidWorks Professionals) were given one of these this year as proof of concept. It’s an educational license and can go where you go.

Imagine taking you’re entire app with all data to the client and running demos or presentations right off the thumb drive. Or how about just getting one of this to deliver SolidWorks to your team. Huge applications here and an incredible idea.

SolidWorks General Session Day 1 Amazing

solidworks world 2008

Right now I’m wishing I could start this blog post out the way SolidWorks started out their first General Session of the Conference. It, as well as the entire session, was nothing short of incredible. I’ve been to MLM (multi-level marketing) conferences where no expense is spared for those deals, and they didn’t compare.

First, my complements to the VExplorer animation. Incredible. Call me. I want to interview you or steal your nerve endings. Both would be quick and painless.

Let’s capture the main content.

SolidWorks Has Perfectly Trimmed 3-Dimensional Toenails

solidworks world 2008

A question…

How Many SolidWorks Users Does It Take to Change A Dangling Relation
I’m gonna venture out and say, oh… 699,999. That’s (apparently) how many other people like you… use SolidWorks… and are driving decisions at SolidWorks HQ.

Driving the decisions? Really? Then why…(loud tire screech)

Now, I know. If you’re sitting at your workstation, gunning for a deadline, this type of stuff may seem mundane. Perhaps, akin to a post on a right fancy cheese slicer with thickness adjustment. If, however, you wonder how you job, hence career, may blossom like a magic pony, you may be a bit curious.

I have no idea how magic ponies blossom. I’m dead stinkin’ tired.

David Allen On Getting Things Done

You may be familiar with the book Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen. I recommend it if you haven’t read it.

If you want a taste, check out the video below. He’s addressing Google on the core principles of focusing your activity and being clear about decisions. It’s a bit long, but good.

One basic concept…

By leaving something in a visible location you’re automatically giving it a priority. You’re saying something has to be done with that.
