Finding Clarity in Isolation

Hello! if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the SolidSmack RSS feed or to the free email updates. Thanks for visiting!

solidworks tipsWith all the crazy stuff going on in the world it’s kinda nice to get away once in a while from the all the busyness and concentrate on the details that really matter, like catching up with old friends, spending time with family and cleaning up your part geometry.

Yes, I know cleaning up your part geometry is always on your mind and working in assemblies can be a pain, especially the big ones. If only there was a tool that would make it easier. There is and I find myself using it more and more. It’s the SolidWorks Isolate Tool and its here to bring a little clarity to the wonderful world of 3D CAD bliss.

This was actually added in SolidWorks 2007 to help out when working in Assemblies and it couldn’t be more simple to use.

Best Out of Office Replies

I’m feeling sick today. The kind of sick where your head weighs 5 times the rest of your body. So if you try to contact me you’ll probably get one of these replies.

  1. I am currently out at a job interview and will reply to you if I fail to get the position. Be prepared for my mood.
  2. You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn’t have received anything at all.
  3. I will be unable to delete all the unread, worthless emails you send me until I return from holiday on 4 April. Please be patient and your mail will be deleted in the order it was received.
  4. Thank you for your email. Your credit card has been charged $5.99 for the first ten words and $1.99 for each additional word in your message.
  5. The e-mail server is unable to verify your server connection and is unable to deliver this message. Please restart your computer and try sending again. (The beauty of this is that when you return, you can see how many in-duh-viduals did this over and over).
  6. Thank you for your message, which has been added to a queuing system. You are currently in 352nd place, and can expect to receive a reply in approximately 19 weeks.
  7. I’ve run away to join a different circus.

I got these in an email a couple years ago. Glad I kept it. Have you ever used a reply like these?

Friday Smackdown

retro wallpapersFighting isn’t going to solve anything, unless you are more nimble and able to take out my feet when I least expect it. Then all I’ll be able to do is cry and look at these links.

Wallpaper from the 70’s - Get modern, get Retro, get Funkified. Sweet, sweet wallpapery goodness.
Jason Statham Workout - The Transporter, Crank, War. Here’s the workout that makes him the man.
Quake Proof House made of Straw - I’ve been interested in this construction. This is a good story about it with pics.
Free Fonts of the Month - Smashing Magazine’s free fonts collection. This is the most diverse collection I’ve seen.
Shattering Still Life - This is one of the coolest photo experiments I’ve seen. A shatter that triggers light that captures a split second of transformation.

SolidWorks SP 0.0 Available for Download

solidworks 2008 logoWell, we’re finally at that point in time that SolidWorks releases Service Pack 0.0 of the highly anticipated 2008 version. You’ll be receiving a nice box in 2-4 weeks with hopefully another notepad, but you can of course download it with the speed and agility of the improved Download Manager directly from SolidWorks.

Hacking the SolidWorks Options Registry File

solidworks tips

Warning: This involves changing registry settings in the .sldreg file created by the Copy Options Wizard, so before doing this be sure 1) that you know what you’re doing 2) that you’re comfortable doing it 3) that you’ve made a backup of your Options. Oh, and SolidWorks probably won’t recommend doing this.

When you upgrade SolidWorks to a new version all your settings will transfer over just fine. If you’re doing a completely new installation, with no previous version installed, and don’t have a settings file, then you’re hosed and have to reset all the options, menus, toolbars, and keyboard shortcuts yourself. This tip will show you how to use settings you’ve saved from one version of SolidWorks on a newer or older version of SolidWorks.

Simple Idea, Simple Design, Cool Product

sternform-90-90.jpgOne reason why I like SolidWorks is because it’s very easy to put a design idea together. It’s a great tool, but creating something out of pure inspiration is a lot of fun. I find a lot of things that inspire me and Sternform is the most recent. They take some very simple ideas, create a design and come out with a very cool and highly functional product.

Their latest product is the 90-90 shelf light for Pling Collection and it doesn’t get much simpler than that. Now, I’m not sure what they use to design their ideas, but it’s a great example of how you can take your idea and turn it into something functional. Keep going with your ideas. You never know what could happen.

Here’s some shots of their product designs.

3 Quick Tip Note Tricks for Your Finger Tips

solidworks tipsNotes in SolidWorks didn’t use to be so easy to use. Now, there’s actually a lot you can do with them and SolidWorks 2008 is going to bring some new things, like adding balloons to notes. Here’s some tips for notes that only take a nimble finger 2.9 second each.

Move right along
To move the note it small increments, select it and use the arrow keys to shift it up, down, left and right.

Copy me baby
To quickly copy a note, hold Ctrl, select the note and drag to a new spot

Don’t lock me in
To keep notes from snapping to other notes, hold the shift key, select and drag it.

I’d like these to be a little finer tuned. Like, it would be nice to hold Ctrl or Alt when using the arrow key to move the notes in half increments. And when moving or copying a note it would be nice for the note to stay in the same place I picked to move it. Besides that, these bring a small ray of sunshine to a note infested drawing.

Ninjas Are the Cause of Random Hilarity and Death

I know what you’re thinking. I go and mention Ninjas on the about page and haven’t had much in the way of ninjas. Well, I know you can’t see that I wear a ninja outfit 24-7, so I’m going to give you the new video from AskaNinja.com and hope you live through the onslaught.

What does this have to do with SolidWorks? Absolutely everything and nothing all at once.

What Gets you Riled Up? How to Deal with Jerks.

angry-man-sm.jpg“Those that anger you, control you.”

I’ve heard this quote many times and it true as many times as I’ve seen it. And what’s worst is when the agitator knows it. This happens all too often in the workplace and often catches you totally unaware. By the time its past, everyone has seen a side of you that scares small children and leaves them in a mumbling state of shock. What’s worse is letting it fester and taking it home. Not Good.

So what can be done to resist the urge to wrap someone around a street sign?
